shoprite-lakewoodA group of residents of Lakewood, NJ, have banded together to call for a reasonably-priced supermarket to open in their town.

With the planned openings of several new supermarkets in their town, these residents are focused on the vacant store of Shop Rite in Shop Rite Plaza at Route 9 and Kennedy Blvd., from which Shop Rite recently departed to move down the road.

These residents have created a petition, asking the KRM supermarket of Brooklyn, NY – founded by the noted baal tzedakah and baal chesed Rabbi Moish Binick – to open a branch in the now empty Shop Rite store.

The text of the petition is as follows:

KRM, please move into the former Shop Rite location:

We, the people of Lakewood are desperate for a supermarket that will offer affordable prices in a convenient, nearby location. We don’t need another fancy grocery store that will focus on selling expensive prepared foods and everyday groceries at convenience store prices.

KRM, we know good and well that you will be able to open an amazing supermarket as has been shown for many years in your current locations.

Please do us a favor (probably even a mitzvah) to the 99% of families that can’t afford the current grocery pricing in Lakewood.  Please open a location in Shop Rite Plaza.

The petition can be seen here.

  1. This is pathetic. Do you really think Krm is cheaper? It’s only the loss leaders… Everything else is the same price, if not more expensive.

  2. KRM tried years ago to open but SOME PEOPLE didn’t want the competition to their own stores so they got the bigger machers to not allow it.

  3. Yes, it would be very desirable to have a store like KRM here in Lakewood (I personally would like that), but, it is possible there is reason for another local store to have a din Torah for encroaching on his business territory. (His prices are not so low and I personally don’t shop there anyway). I think there IS room for a store like KRM because Hashem provides everyone with what’s coming to him and no current store owner should worry that he’ll lose his parnosa because of a new store. After all if Shop Rite didn’t harm his parnosa why should KRM?

  4. I agree. We shop in Moishes (KRM’s sister store in Flatbush) all the time. Why should we pay extra, just because some worker greets me by the door and asks “how am I doing today” and the walls are painted with a fresh coat every 3 days? Total stupidity. I hate being ripped off or price gouged. Moishes/KRM actually CARE about their fellow Jewish Brothers. Kol Hakavod. I wish them Hatzlacha.

  5. How are these “fancy” stores staying open? If there is high supply and low demand at these stores then the prices wil go down.

  6. KRM

The entire Lakewood community is waiting for you to arrive in Lakewood and open up a store. Your Lakewood store will be packed

  7. Its crazy how desperate you guys sound for this new supermarket. Shop rite was perfectly fine. Was it really overly priced or are you guys just REALLY cheap ? You guys are just cheap.

  8. Having a discounted store, DECREASES THE PRICE FOR ALL STORES. other stores need to be competitive. so all of Lakewood (including high end families) would gain off it.

  9. Why doesn’t someone do a serious price comparison of krm and 5 larger stores in lakewood I’m sure they would cooperate and then we would know where we stand
