  1. The Shtreimel is real. He wears it on Yom Tov, lekavod his Shver zatzal
    Some people honor their shver.
In fact, his father, the Steipler, was named Yaakov Yisroel after the Cherkaaser, who his father was a chossid of.

  2. The Steipler grew up in a Chassidish family and wore a shtreimel by shalos suedos in their honor .There are a few pictures of him wearing one. It looks RCK is also doing so too now.

  3. shtreimels are not chassidish hats, true chassidim wear them primarily in our times. Some history will help here: in 1795 the final partition of poland lithuania commonwealth took place. Russia took biggest portion of north/eastern region that included lithuania, bielorrusia regions. shortly after, czar nikolai has enacted many decrees against the jews, one of them was called gzeiros malbush. part of it was to forbid the Jews wearing shtreimels – their traditional hats. that is why chassidim of chabbad do not wear them, officially chassidim of karlin-stolin do not wear them, both were from those regions. Note that talmidei Gra were wearing shtreimels as this was the normal Jewish attire in that regions. Many of the talmidei Gra left and settled in Israel before the gzeiras malbush. that is why several “litvaks” non-chassidim, in Israel have a minhag to continue and wear them as that was their fathers minhag. On the other hand Jews of hungary, poland, ukraine etc, were under the control of austria-hungarian empire and gzeiros malbush was not applicable. So R’ Chaim shlita wears straimel on yom tov because of minhag avoseinu. Note that R’ Hutner ztl wore spodik (similar to shtreimel just taller hat) and R’ Eliashiv also wore shtreimel on yom tov. this of course is a quick reference for the oilam, the reader is encouraged to do own research and become MORE familiar with this important historic minhag.

  4. See the Artscroll Rav Chaim Kanievsky Haggadah page 17 first bullet “Rav Chaim wears a shtreimel at the Seder and all Yom Tov meals in honor of Yom Tov. (He does not, however, wear it for prayers on Shabbos or Yom Tov.)”
