Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer lit the menorah at the Israeli Embassy in Washington for the second night of Chanukah on Monday at the first event hosted by Israel’s new ambassador to the US, Michael Herzog, i24 News reports.

It was also the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic began that the embassy held an in-person event.

”From the time of Moses, to the Maccabees, to the Nazis and today, so many have tried to annihilate the Jewish people and our spirit. All have failed. Pharaoh is gone. Antiochus is gone. Hitler is gone. But the Jewish people live on. In America and in Eretz Israel. Am Israel Chai,” Schumer said.

In January, the 71-year-old Schumer became the first Jewish Senate majority leader in US history.

The embassy’s statement noted that the ceremony took place on the 74th anniversary of UN resolution 181 calling for the establishment of a Jewish state that would go on to become the modern state of Israel.

Michael Herzog, 69, is a retired general and veteran diplomat. The elder brother of Israel’s President Isaac Herzog spent 40 years in the Israel Defense Forces and took part in diplomatic negotiations under five prime ministers.

  1. Lip service from Schumer the Tumor …er, Schumer the Shomer who refused to speak against the Iran deal.
SInce he has more important things to do than sit shiva for his father, perhaps he can sit shiva for his sense of decency?

  2. Limaaseh, Senator Schumer did step forward when we were trying to save the life of Alta Fixler a”h from the murderous Britains. We have to have hakaras hatov for that. I certainly do. Yesh kona olam haba bishah achas. You never know. I disagree with almost everything he stands for, but I will never forget how he personally got involved in trying to save an innocent helpless life of a fellow Yid.
