[Photos below.] Alevaya-of-rav-chaim-steinpproximately 37,000 people attended the levaya in Lakewood, NJ, of the zekan roshei hayeshivos in the United States, Rav Chaim Stein zt”lrosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Telshe-Cleveland, according to data released by the Lakewood Police Department at a meeting today.

The debriefing gathering at Police Headquarters on Third Street in downtown Lakewood was attended by Lakewood Police Chief Rob Lawson, Township Committee police liaison Meir Lichtenstein, and others from the department, who were credited with doing a superb job handling the massive crowds.

The levaya featured a heavy security presence, with snipers visible on the roofs of the buildings surrounding Beth Medrash Govoah, where the hespeidim were delivered. On 12-hour notice, the Police Department, in conjunction with the Department of Emergency Management, Chaveirim and others, made the necessary arrangements to handle the enormous number of people.

A source that spoke with Matzav.com following the levaya put the crowd estimate at 18,000. Other reports at the time put the number at 20,000.

However, the Police Department, using the National Parks Services formula, came up with the figure of 37,000 – and even that number, say police sources, is conservative. The crowd at the levaya was simply mammoth.

Without question, it was the largest levaya – and perhaps the largest event ever – in the history of Lakewood Township.

  1. amazing kiddush hashem! try putting 37000 people in any other city in the world on a hot summer day and not one injury, fight ,arrest etc. It was a very sad and humbling day for lakewood and for jews all over the world but Mi k’amcha Yisroel

  2. Stop being ridiculous! Everyday there are baseball games with more than 40,000 people and there are usually no injuries, fights etc. It was a kiddush hashem but there is no reason to put someone else down.

  3. Why such an obsession with the numbers?!

Stop for a moment and take the real lesson from the “klap” we just received from Shomayim and don’t let the Yeter Hara make us forget the ikar and focus on the Tafel (if the number at the levaya can even be considered a tafel)

The following awesom piece was taken (with permission) from http://www.halachafortoday.com and should be read and re-read and internalized by every serious Jew.

    ???? ???? ???? ??

HaRav Yitzchok Dov Koppelman Zatzal…Z’Kan Roshei Hayeshiva from Europe.

HaRav Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz…Z’Kan Roshei Hayeshiva from Eretz Yisroel.

HaRav Chaim Yaakov Stein…Z’Kan Roshei Hayeshiva from America.

All summoned back to Olam Ha’Emes within days of each other.

Can we really fool ourselves into thinking that there is no message here?

Can we really continue being the same people we were yesterday?

Can we really continue ignoring the warning signs?

Can we really assume that the world will go on as usual?

    Losing a giant is painful.

    Losing two giants is devastating.

Losing three giants, from three parts of the world in a matter of days, is unbearable.

The Torah world must gear up for the final battle.

The battle to save this world from the throes of immorality.

The battle to save this world from the desensitization of sin.

The battle to stand up tall and proud in defense of the holy Torah and its values.

We may not know all the details of the final battle.

But one thing we do know, is who will be victorious.

    ???? ?’ ???? ?? ?? ????

The sides will be clearly defined.

    Good will win over evil.

    Truth will win over lies.

    Yaakov will win over Eisav

    Yitzchok will win over Yishmael

Am Yisroel will win over Amalek

    Purity will win over promiscuity

    Tzniyus will win over Pritzus

    Torah will win over Tumah

There will be no more gray; only black and white.

    ???? ????? ?? ????? ??? ???? ??? ???? ??? ???

We will be surprised, even shocked, what side of the fence people end up on.

Let’s do our part now, before it’s too late, to make sure we end up on the right side of history, as the final chapter is written.

Choose wisely my dear brothers and sisters, choose wisely.

  4. I was there.

It was very special that Bais Medresh Govoha of Lakewood hosted this funeral and treated it like it was theyr own.
