NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch has made a dramatic shake-up within the police department, removing a significant number of high-ranking officials. The purge began with the department’s Internal Affairs Bureau (IAB) just one week after allegations surfaced that Jeffrey Maddrey, a top official in the NYPD, had been exchanging overtime for personal favors.

One of the notable removals was Deputy Chief Chris Morello, who held the second-highest position in the Internal Affairs Bureau, an agency designed to root out corruption within the force. According to paperwork obtained by The NY Post, Morello was reassigned. This followed the ouster of IAB’s Chief Miguel Iglesias, who was removed from his position the same day a bombshell exposé was published on December 21.

Another key change came with the reassignment of Inspector Joseph Profeta, the head of IAB’s Group 1, which handles investigations of allegations against high-ranking officers. Profeta was transferred yesterday to Patrol Borough Brooklyn North, as detailed in the documents. This group specifically handles investigations concerning officers at the rank of captain or above.

“Tisch means business,” a senior insider commented. “She’s cleaning up the mess and putting the department back on track.”

According to sources, these actions were necessary due to “a lack of oversight” within the IAB, which had failed to properly monitor its operations.

Additionally, Inspector Michael Ricciardi, who led IAB’s Special Operations, was also removed and reassigned to Patrol Borough Manhattan North, according to the official records. Over a dozen other IAB leaders, from lieutenants to sergeants, were reassigned to distant precincts throughout the city.

In a further shake-up, six individuals from Maddrey’s office—five detectives and one officer—were also removed. Many of these staff members were reassigned to more basic duties, including patrolling public housing areas, according to the documents.

“If you want to show that you are genuinely trying to change the face of the department and get rid of all of Maddrey’s cronies, this is the best way to do it,” a veteran officer with over two decades of service remarked.

Earlier this month, Tisch also took action against improper transfers within the department. She ordered 500 officers who had been reassigned inappropriately to return to their original posts, according to an internal memo. The controversial practice, known as “telephone message transfers,” led to staffing shortages in certain areas, ultimately resulting in slower response times, the memo, dated December 9, explained.
