Police responded in less than a minute to the shooting shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, said Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, in the Oregon District, which contains a number of restaurants, bars and theaters. Yet in that small amount of time the shooter was able to kill 9 people and injure 26 more.
She said if the police hadn’t responded so quickly, the death toll could have been much higher because thousands of people were on the streets.
“The officers were there less than a minute from the beginning of the shooting. The shooter was able to kill nine people and injure 26 in less than a minute,” Whaley said during a news conference Sunday.
