Police raided an illegal wedding taking place on a Meah Shearim roof where a 15-year-old groom was about to marry a 13-year-old kallah. The girl’s father complained that he had been unable to locate her for the past two months.

Police detained and later released members of the “shawl community” involved in the match, whose women cover themselves in voluminous dresses and shawls.

  1. 100-125 years ago it was considered normal to get married at age 13 and 15. Because we live in an “enlightened society” where the secular world has decided that one is an adult only upon reaching the age of 18 doesn’t mean that its our standard and a true value. What it does mean is secular society’s standards have corroded our life style as Torah Jews so much that we now believe their normal standards are ours. It maybe that some kids are not ready at 13 and 15 to get married, but let me ask you a question? Is the secular society way better where they don’t get married at 13 and 15 but are having babies anyway (or abortions)?
No, my kids didn’t get married at age13 or 15, but that doesn’t mean there is anything inheritantly wrong with that way of life! They are just adhearing to true Torah values more than us. Because you don’t live that way is no reason to belittle their chose!

    • If you want to go back in time, then the Jewish way of marriage was (and in fact in many places still is) for the parents to arrange the match. Here, the father clearly did not know what was happening. That itself is a really MAJOR violation of the JEWISH way of marriage and family life going back all the way to Avraham Avinu (who arranged the marriage of not only a daughter but he son as well) in an unbroken tradition through the ages. So just what UNJEWISH babble are you about?

  2. seems the father of the girl wasn’t agreeable to this marriage. There are good reasons why we don’t marry at a young age anymore. Our society is more integrated with others and our ways are not so set till we are older.

  3. True. But the father had a strong say in the match. Here it seems she was coerced or even willfully at best, but against the fathers wishes. And what business does a 15 year old boy have marrying a 13 year without permission? Where do you think this would lead to???

  5. This has nothing to do with corrosion of our life style. We are Torah Jews and proud of it. Open your eyes and let them sparkle at Torah led homes. How beautiful they can be! What many of us have lost is our sense of direction and the feeling of true love that Hashem loves us. Allow yourself to feel the love of Hashem regularly, and you will begin to see the shine of Torah.
On another note. Are our children as mature as the children of yore? Can they at 15 years handle marriage maturely? Are 20 year old’s handling marriage maturely? Some yes and some not.
    B’Hatzlocho.

  6. 100-150 years ago, we had wells for water, selective electricity, no heat or hot water & OUT HOUSE in our back yards.

Most families shecheted their own chicken, collected eggs & did wash in the river bank. Most men worked at menial labor & children helped in factories & on the farms.

All those who vote for those years… go for it!!!!
