A Louisiana police officer providing security at a high school basketball game in New Orleans was shot and killed following a mask-related dispute, authorities said, and a suspect was immediately taken into custody.

Tulane University Police Officer Martinus Mitchum was shot Friday while working at George Washington Carver High School in the 3000 block of Higgins Boulevard, the New Orleans Police Department said.

John Shallerhorn, 35, was booked early Saturday for armed robbery and first-degree murder of a policeman, Fox 8 reported, citing Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office jail records.

After arriving at the high school Friday, Shallerhorn allegedly robbed a 39-year-old man sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot, raising his shirt to brandish a firearm and demanding the victim’s medallion chain, police said.

The victim handed the chain to Shallerhorn, who then attempted to enter the school but was stopped for not wearing a mask.

A physical altercation ensued with a school employee, police said, before Mitchum intervened and escorted Shallerhorn out.

Shallerhorn, as he was leaving, allegedly shot the officer twice. He then placed the firearm on the ground and was taken into custody, police said.

  1. Why should anyone be forced to kill themselves with a mask? If you want to wear it, fine. Go ahead, wear 2 or 3 or 4 and one for others too but leave us alone. Maybe the death of the officer will stop this nonsense.

  2. Terrible tragedy. I have been reading news accounts of this for days. He was a well liked officer and had publicly called for police departments to use body cams, and to combat police racism. He was murdered protecing others.

I have not been reading anything about him from Black Lives Matter. Just as with the cold blooded murder of Officer Miosotis Familia in the Bronx a few years ago, nothing from the national organization. Apparently only some black lives matter. 🙁

  3. So the cop did not intervene to stop the armed robbery, but he did “heroically” intervene to enforce a useless-mask illegal-mandate. Obviously, it’s possible that the didn’t see the robbery but did see the mask altercation, but I would not be surprised if the cop did see the robbery and didn’t bother with it, while a dumb mask had to be enforced, Herr Kommandant. Most cops are not our friends; they sold their souls for their pension and benefits, and they defend a politician that signs their paycheck, not a citizen that actually pays for it.
