christieRepublican Chris Christie leads Gov. Jon Corzine by 10 percentage points in New Jersey’s race for governor, according to a poll released today. The Quinnipiac University poll of likely voters has the former federal proseuctor topping the Democratic incumbent 50 percent to 40 percent. Christie’s lead extends to 24 percentage points among unaffiliated voters polled.

“Christie has hit the magic 50 percent mark, and if he can hold onto that, of course he wins the election,” said Clay Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

The poll contains a triple whammy for Corzine. He gets the worst approval rating of his term — 56 percent — which is about the same percentage of people who say he does not deserve to be re-elected. And 52 percent view him as cold and businesslike, not warm and friendly.

By contrast, nearly half of the voters polled say they don’t know enough about Christie to have formed an opinion.

This is the first measure of the two candidates since the June 2 primary.

“Don’t count Gov. Corzine out,” said Richards. “But he certainly has his work cut out for him.”

A similar poll of registered voters taken last month had Christie up by 7 percentage points.

Richards said the focus of Corzine’s campaign should be on the 19 percent of Democrats who say they’ll vote for Christie and the 44 percent who say Corzine isn’t honest and trustworthy, though he’s never faced a corruption allegation.

The poll also shows that voters are most concerned about taxes, followed by the overall condition of the economy. New Jersey has the highest property taxes in the country, averaging more than $7,000 a household.

Corzine, a former Wall Street CEO, is even seen as weaker than his opponent in handling the state budget. About a third of voters polled say Corzine would do a better job with the state’s finances, while 45 percent say Christie would do better.

The telephone poll of 1,338 registered New Jersey voters taken between June 3 and June 8 has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 2.7 percentage points.
