Poll: Schumer Is Most Popular Senator in U.S.

schumerSen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is the nation’s most popular senator, according to survey results released by Public Policy Polling today.

The polling firm released advance details of the poll today which showed that Schumer received top marks in his own state with 57 percent of New York respondents saying they were happy with the job their senior senator was doing.

The company polled approval ratings of 60 senators in their own states to see how beloved they were by their constituents.

After Schumer, the next most popular senators were Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., with 54 percent and David Vitter, R-La., with 53 percent.

The least popular senators were appointed senators Carte Goodwin, D-W.V., George LeMieux, R-Fla., and Roland Burris, D-Ill., though the poll stressed that “that doesn’t really seem fair since they were all appointed Senators.”

The elected senator with the lowest approval rating was retiring Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, with 22 percent. Trailing him were Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter — whose loss in the Democratic primary to Rep. Joe Sestak means his long Senate career will soon come to an end — and Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., both of whom managed only 27 percent approval ratings.

The full poll will be released Wednesday.
