meir-porushIsraeli Deputy Minister of Education, MK Rabbi Meir Porush, this morning sent a sharp protest letter to Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman over the alleged desecration of Shabbos at the Israeli embassy in Washington last week.

In the letter sent to the Foreign Minister, Porush noted the media reports that Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, held a conference call to brief all Israeli consulates in the U.S. about the tension between Israel and the U.S. According to reports, the conversation took place on Shabbos day at about 12 noon.

Apparently, because it was Shabbos, Oren was unable to contact all the consulates, since three of them did not want or could not take part in the telephone conference, and the Ambassador was “outraged,” it was reported.

Porush asked Lieberman in the letter, “Are we talking about pikuach nefesh that justified the desecration of Shabbos? Why couldn’t this conference call be postponed until after Shabbos – just a wait of several hours?”

Porush also criticized Ambassador Oren, declaring that Israel is in a severe crisis, the worst in the history of relations between Israel and the United States. “The Ambassador has proven himself unfit for office, because he is lacking the ability to correctly assess the political situation and has allowed panic and hysteria” to spread.
