kineretNautical archaeologists have reported the discovery of a “monumental” conical stone pile built of large, natural, unhewn basalt cobbles and boulders, on the floor of the Sea of Galilee.

The structure is definitely man-made, and measures about 70 meters in diameter at about 219 meters below sea level, reported archaeologists Yitzchak Paz, Moshe Reshef, Zvi Ben-Avraham, Shmuel Marco, Gideon Tibor and Dani Nadel, in the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology.

Close inspection by scuba diving revealed that the structure is made of basalt boulders up to 1 meter long with no apparent construction pattern and no signs of cutting or chiseling.

“A possible interpretation for the structure is related to the fact that it attracts fish and thus may be interpreted as a part of a marine-based economy. If so, the structure must have been built as an underwater structure,” the archaeologists wrote, noting that structures built of stone that are thought to be ancient fish nurseries are well known in the Sea of Galilee and are found near the shores at regular intervals. However, they are significantly smaller than the structure revealed recently, with diameters of up to 4 meters.

An alternative scenario is that the structure was built onshore, when the water level was lower than today.

A report on LiveScience.com said the structure appears to be a giant cairn, with rocks piled on top of each other. “Structures like this are known from elsewhere in the world and are sometimes used to mark burials,” according to the report. “Researchers do not know if the newly discovered structure was used for this purpose.”

Researcher Yitzchak Paz, of the Israel Antiquities Authority and Ben-Gurion University, told LiveScience.com the structure could date back more than 4,000 years. The “effort invested in such an enterprise is indicative of a complex, well-organized society, with planning skills and economic ability,” the researchers wrote in their journal paper.

Chazal teach that the well of Miriam came to rest in the Kinneret. The Be’er is described in Medrashim and meforshim as a stone. Could this stone structure perhaps be the Be’eirah shel Miriam“?

  1. To number 2:
It’s not the peasch of Gehinom. The pesach of Gehinom is in the Kidron Valley. This was even verified by a gallach from the church in the valley who told Rav Chaim Shmulevitz that he saw it it open up and swallow a dead woman during a her own funeral. The gallach said that this woman was evil and stingy during her lifetime.

  2. #1, excellent point, that’s because the title and last paragraph were added by matzav and are not in the original article on Arutz Sheva.

  3. #1: Agree. In fact, the Be’er shel Miriam does not have a fixed resting place. Hence the minhag to drink well water on Motz’ei Shabbos.

#2: Please see the Gemarra in Eruvin 19a, for where the entraces to Gehinnom are. The Kinneret is NOT one of them.

  4. To down to earth: When one gets his hashkafa from the computer and not from gedolim and hashkafa sforim, he will not accept a very important axiom of Yiddishkeit. Our Chazal
were very holy peaple. If Chazal state something, they must be right (HRH”G R’ Bainish Finkel ZTL, in a conversation with me,
5743. U may not understand what they are saying, but eventually they will all be proven
right. Again, this is not debatable, but Emunas Chachom which is imperative in being a true Torah Jew. If Chazal say that B’eer Miriam is at bottom of Kinneret, then it must be so. Whether this find is the right one is not important. It is well documented that the GRA had ruach hakodesh. He edited the whole shas and filled in the many lines and words
that were miscopied or deleted by censors, through-out the centuries purely from his own
brilliance and siyata d’shmayah. Now that the Vatican and others, have open their archives, wonder of wonders, he has never been wrong!
Bang this into your head. Emunas Chachomim, Emunas CHachomim, EM!

  5. Another proof of Emunas Chachomim: HRH”G
R’ Dovid Feinstein Shlit”a said on a video of the 100th anniversity of MTJ. What made my father ZTL the Posik Hador, was that after the war, There were so many Agunos. No rav wanted to pasken to clear them to re-marry. R’Moshe ZTL stepped up and paskened hundreds, and was never wrong! That is siyata d’shmaya at the highest level, and our duty is to accept that Chazal have this s.d.

  6. To #’s 11 & 12, Flatbush Rabbi: How right you are. Only when science, literature or anything agrees and corresponds with Torah and our holy sages, do we know it is 100% right!
