In response to the Nekadesh event for women last week focusing on the challenges of technology in the life of a frum woman, some people have decided to take the next step.

These activists distributed a sign-up sheet, seen above, seeking signatures.

The paper, given out at Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, NJ, says, “We, the undersigned, ask of all our mosdos and businesses to preserve the kedusha of our community and Klal Yisroel and not advertise on any news sites and social media platform.”

It is not yet confirmed which mosdos or businesses have signed on to this commitment.

    • …and let the naysayers do their thing.
      Detached from kedush R”L

The only reason that someone would comment against, is from a feeling of guilt – which is a good thing. It’s the first step in the תשובה process.

  1. HooooRay! I’ll be able to read the news without all the ads popping into my face!

למעשה, I think it’s unfair of them to promote this concept. People/Businesses have to earn money. They’re entitled to do ehrliche business! Not everyone can persist on government handouts: ie. Section 8, Food stamps, Medicaid, School vouchers,Obamaphones etc. Some people work to earn an honest living, as is promoted in the Torah. We don’t all have live in the 1800s.

  2. How is it any different than the weekly magazines that are out their advertising companies’ products! Technology is a tool. Can be used for good and can be used for bad. I personally have no need for social media and it’s distractions and it’s waste of time and loshon hora, but I see nothing wrong with it being used as a business tool. If the mainstream gedolim of the day say it’s a problem, I’m mevatel my daas to theirs, but I’d love to know why this became a red line and not the outlandish print ads in magazines?

  3. It’s how they make money and how to get the word out. I don’t know how this is not going to affect institutions and businesses? It might not end well. And all the tzedakah that is raised mostly through technology?

    • When it comes to kedusha or chizuk its never enough. The problem is how far do you want to go with something. Each kehilla has its takanos with smartphones and computers. These people want to take it up another level. That should be a personal issue not something you push on the entire tzibur.

  4. “It is not yet confirmed which mosdos or businesses have signed on to this commitment.” Look all around this page and you will see the ones who did NOT sign on to this committment.

  5. This is for each individual to do on his own. Don’t make it into kllal thing. This is exactly what the yetzer hara wants. Go to the other extreme until you make something which isn’t forbidden into something thats forbidden and then whatever you built up until then just collapses and you look foolish. This is exactly what happened with Adam Harishon when he told the woman you’ll die if you touch the tree when Hashem bever said that.

  6. Haha…. that’s till they need money and fundraise heavily with charidy, chesed fund and the rest… STOP the hypocrisy.

    • Actually, many of the chasidishe mosdos do not do online campaigns. This is exactly the point. Each kehilla should make their own takonos. This paper seems like it was made by an individual who was inspired by the kinas last week and wants to spread his inspiration to everyone else. These types of things can’t be an individual’s knee jerk reaction otherwise you stand to look like a jerk.

  7. Baruch Hashem, I grew up in a previous generation. Where we learned how to be adults and make
our own decisions, rather than blindly following anyone with a beard like sheep. When I need an
answer to a halachic question, I will contact my Rav, the one that I follow. As far as the rest, I really
don’t care about about all their rules and regulations. The sheep need to realize that its all about
    control.

  8. The answer to this problem is to stop buying the newspapers and magazines. We stopped a long time ago for two reasons: It is a waste of money and not all of their articles come from Emes, IMO.

  9. Do they think there shouldn’t be Yiddishe news sites? Reminds me of the era when they tried to ban newspapers… When they woke up to reality that there has to be frum newspapers it was much too late. I do not touch newspapers and magazines, but I wouldn’t want them to disappear for the crowd that needs it. חכמה is required to only do things that work.
