rav-avraham-yeshaya-german[Updated info below.] It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Avrohom Yeshaya German zt”l on Shabbos in Eretz Yisroel. A noted talmid chochom and yorei Shomayim, Rav Avrohom Yeshaya was taken at the prime of his life, leaving his family, friends, talmidim and admirers in mourning.

Rav Avrohom Yeshaya was a son of Rav Avner German, renowned menahel of Be’er Hagolah Institutes, which was founded in 1979 at the behest of gedolim as a kiruv initiative to draw close our brethren who hailed from the former Soviet Union. Rav Avrohom Yeshaya’s mother, Rebbetzin Laya German a”h, passed away several years ago.

Rav Avrohom Yeshaya was a talmid of the yeshiva of Rav Dovid Soloveitchik and also learned at Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood. He devoted considerable time to Yeshivas Gevuras Yitzchok-Kesher, an innovative makom Torah in Yerushalayim designed to deal with the unique issues of young people who have lost direction in life and are looking for a meaningful way back. Rav Avrohom Yeshaya’s yedios haTorah and remarkably warm and caring personality came together in a stunning way to touch so many hearts and souls. He was a giant in Torah and a giant in middos, with his humility hiding much of the gadlus he attained.

Rav German is survived by his wife, Mrs. Tziporah German (sitting at 13 Maharal Ziskind in Beit Shemesh and can be reached at 011-972-2-991-0315), and his children; his father, Rav Avner German; and his siblings, Rabbi Mordechai German (starting Friday morn will be sitting at 120 Westervelt Place in Passaic), Mrs. Rochel Shlomowitz (sitting at 13 Maharal Ziskind in Beit Shemesh and can be reached at 011-972-2-991-0315), Mrs. Nechama Pohrille (starting Friday morning will be sitting at 1434 45th Street in Boro Park), Mrs. Bruria Rotkin (starting Friday morning will be sitting at 401 7th Street in Lakewood), Mrs. Shifra Brog and Mrs. Yocheved Shulman.

Rabbi Avner German will be sitting shivah at 1500 Hornell Loop, Apt. 4B, in Starrett City, Brooklyn. Shacharis is at 8:40 a.m. Minchah is at 4:15 p.m., and Maariv is at 8 p.m. The phone number is 718.642.8470.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. Baruch Dayan Emes!

He was a tzadik yesod olam i was a talmid of his for a few years what a tragedy he was a gaon in middos not to mention in depth yedios of kol hatorah kulah He was holding the world up with his middos.
    Yehi Zichro Baruch!!!

  2. We have no idea what this means, and who this was. Everyone who has known Rav German “knew” or at least fealt deeply that he was a tzaddik, aside from his expertise in all areas of Torah b’iyun. His last hours as they were recorded by his family before his sudden, untimely petirah is only a tiny hint at the malach that he was. May he be a meilitz yosher for all of klall Yisroel.

  3. there is never ending things to write about rabbi german z”l i know him very well…….
…he fasted every day only eating at night for 7 years (since is mother a”h got sick after she was nifter he continued this practice…..

He was nifter very suddenly (mincha time shabbos afternoon)

his rebbi hagaon reb dovid shlit”a said he was a true Tzaddak nistar

may he be a zechos for his whole faimly

  4. he was like a father to all who had the honer of getting to know him unfortently i only knew him for about a year but in that year it felt like a lifetime he was always there for me since my first day in kesher no matter how down i was he always left me feeling so much better and always put a smile on my face

  5. this is the rabbi german that was a rebbi in ohr samayach and learned by rav dovid for many years he was also a rebbi in kesher

  6. we’re talking about one of the most special men you could ever meet. I am shocked that only Matzav realized his chashivus to report his petirah. This man was a gadol. At least someone is machshiv true gadlus. Thank you for doing so. May we be comforted for the loss of this adam gadol. The pain is deep. mi yitayn lonutmuraso

  7. his rebbe maran hagaon harav dovid soloveitchick shlita picked him out of all his talmidim and confidents to be a ‘AID’ at his own sons wedding which in the briske family is the most carefuly chosen kibbud. i also heard that befor he went to sleep after complaining that he doesnt feel well he said that he his moichel evryone. he was a true moser nefesh for torah after having lived in lakewood for a number of years after his wedding he felt that the place he would shtieg most and be able to live his life al pi torah mamash was by his rebbe muvhak harav hagaon maran rebbe dovid soloveitchick shlita so with tremendous gevurah he picked himself up and moved back to yerushalayim and learnt by his rebbe up until now. he was a true role model for the american bochurim at the yeshiva, to watch him sit and learn, daven, or when chaping a shmooze after seder, THEY ALL SAW VOS HAIST AN EMESE TALMID FROM THE ROSH YESHIVA SHLITA no words at all neither a article nor a book would do the full justice of capturing this heilige yid as harav velvel soloveitchick said with bitter tears and uncontrolable sobs in the opening words of his passionate hesped HE WAS A GAON IN TORAH A GAON IN YIRAS SHAMAYIM AND A GAON IN MIDDOS AND CHESSED ‘ba hashemesh bitzhorayim’ the sun which lit up warmed and heald the lives of the the thousands of pepole who knew him has set midday,. but we will continue to be inspired by his great legecy. he left over a beutiful family of chashuvah bnai torah bemes who continue to follow in his ways. ‘REB YESHAYA BE A MEILITZ YOSHER FOR YOUR FAMILY THE ROSH YESHIVA SHLITA AND THE ENTIRE YESHIVA AND TALMIDIM WHICH YOU LOVED MIT DI GANTZE HAARTZ!AND FOR YOUR BELOVED TALMIDIM AT KESHER AND THE THOUSANDS THAT WERE INSPIRED BY YOU. ‘YEHI ZICHRO BORUCH’

  8. I was so close with him by Reb Dovid…I just can’t believe this…a total tzadik…spent Shabbos at his home…learned with him…his smile…simplicity…simchas hachayim…never a bad word…sheifus in gadlus…beloved by all…oy me yetain lanu temuraso.

  9. I saw him a few weeks ago at the naitz minyan. Never knew him. But reading what his talmidim and friends have written confirms that the true tzadikim of our generation are the simple yidden who are struggling so hard every day to be closer to Hashem.

    Baruch Dayan HaEmes.

  10. I’m not articulate enough to write a sufficient tribute to him.I remember him from when I learned by R’ Dovid Solovachick and it hurts to hear that the world has lost such a Tzadik.May he be a meilitz yosher

  11. rabbi german was so special and its sad hes gone what will we do without him how will his presence in the yeshiva and klal yisroel be replaced..as said by rav shoen hashlita ..HE WAS A MALACH..always smiling never a bad thought..he was the jug of oil that burnt for 8 days in kesher..he was here for this short time to show his children, his students, this is how you live life and love hashem this is how you treat others..he was a role model for the role models..a rebbe for the rebeim..he was a malach to the malachim..he was rabbi german!!..what will purim be without you rebbe!!!??? rebbe your shoes will never be filled but your torah will be with us forever, and we will spread the light you gave us throughout the world..thank you rebbe..BDE

  12. It is so very difficult to accept this harsh reality. Rabbi Yeshaya German was not just my Rabbi and spiritual guide, he was my father. From the moment I walked through Kesher’s doors I formed an extremely unique and strong connection to the Rabbi. Only those who knew him merited to recognize his godliness in all aspects of torah and chesed. Rabbi German was so great yet so simple. Who else in the world would leave his loving family and sleep on an uncomfortabally thin matteress for six days out of the week in the school dormitory? I remember he would leave Kesher on Friday morning and return Motzei Shabbos so he can care for his beloved children. I have personally spent hours upon hours with him on the phone and in person. He would offer the best and most practical advice. Despite his tremendous and in-depth knowledge in torah, he was so humble. Never did he expect anyone to give him any honor. He was always happy with what he had!

Rebbe, with tears in my eyes, I love you dearly! Your passing is heart breaking yet so inspiring. My beloved friends, we have lost a tzadik!

  13. About my Rebbi chavrusa and beloved friend,
What I write will never do justice. I saw you just a few days ago. I was just stopping by and had to leave, I saw you learning in the Beis Hamedrash in the corner. I had to leave so I just quickly said Hi you waved back to me and smiled. Oh how I wish I would have taken a few minutes to speak with you a few more words.

  14. (Continuing from previous post)
Rebbe we spent hours upon hours together whether it was in learning or just talking about anything. I could speak to you about anything, you were always there to listen to any problems I had or help I needed.
Such a shock I got when I heard this terrible news. There was no hint of it at all. You were doing what you do every day, learning and helping others. I will never forget bending over to you and carrying you to your final resting place.
Rebbi there will always be an empty part of me without you. I will never forget the time you gave to me and help in every aspect of life.
Oh Rebbi if there is any consolation for me it is that if there was anyone who was ready to go at any time and place it was you. You always told us this life is nothing and ‘I’m just trying to do my tafkid in life. Nothing is up to me, It’s all in the hands of the Ribbono shel Olam.’
Rebbi I’m sure you are in a much better place now. Somewhere you’ve been working to get to in your relatively short life.
With grief and love in my heart I thank you for everything again and say my final farewell.

  15. rebbi rebbi rebbi!! you are in such a good place now. you are so happy and you left us so sad and all orphans. your smile will stay with me forever and your torah you brought to especially yeshivas kesher will be an inspiration to change peoples lives even though your not here. your whole life you tried so hard to get close to god and you succeeded rebbi. but now your closer and happier than ever before. please daven for us to hashem because we need it. youve changed my life forever, rebbi youd be proud of me now.

  16. The role model for the Midnight Rabbi and all the world, someone who truly cared and the only thing he was most strict in was loving others. Here’s a quick story of my Rebbe in Ohr Somayach of a man who truly is beyond words. He told us about not watching movies “who needs to watch movies when your fight with the evil inclination is the best movie there is” !!! He lived and breathed Torah true lifestyle and may his holy family find comfort and all of us as mourners of Tzion , amen!

  17. I am a former student of his father, Rav Avner German. Two years ago when I was in Yerushalayim, I had the honor of meeting with rabbi Yeshaya German. He took the time to take me to his mother’s grave site. I wanted to honor her as she was such a role model. I found him to be just like her. A warm and wonderful person doing everything to help young Jewish boys who needed him. I am shocked at this news and I send my deepest condolences to his family.

  18. its been a couple of days already however i stil cannot not come to myself i cant yet accept the harsh and bitter realty that reb yeshaya is not here anymore. just like the suns steady presence in the world always there to light up and warm those near and far so to hagaon reb yeshayas constant presence at yeshiva would light up and warm the lives of those around him, just like the suns powerful rays are felt far far away so to hagaon reb yeshayas rays of light touched those both close and far. just by watching him sitting and learning second seder with his beloved son asher or davening maariv at the yeshiva was an experience in itself, he lived his life totaly devoid of any olam hazeh whatsoever and was mistapek bemuet he had simply nothing else in his life but torah, he was a true talmid neeman of the rosh yeshiva shlita blev venefesh, how he would come to the chumash shiur on shabbos and wait outside until the door opened just like a bochur to see such hisbatlus to the rosh yeshiva shlita was truly a sight to behold EMES MAH NEHDAR.he raised the bar and was a true machayev to evrey single american bocher in yeshiva AND that being an american is not an excuse and that there are no limitations to gadlus batorah if the heart truly desires it. he was tremendously great both in torah and yiras shomayim yet he held nothing of himself just another yid trying to do his best his anivus was truly amazing. he was a tremendous bal hashkafah yet he was the most practical down to earth person you would ever find as his talmidim at kesher will attest to. his simchas hachaim was something to realy behold he was a living testement that true happines is attaind by living a life of torah and by being an omal batorah oh’and how was he omal!. to truly capture this malach in the form of man pen and paper do not suffice i truly believe that here would be correct to quote’if all of land would be parchment and the seas were of ink’ it would still be impossible to truly justify this great gaon and tzadik,… for the world they lost a truly great loss however for the bnai hayeshiva the word ‘loss’ simply doesnt begin to even remotly describe the impact of hagaon reb yeshayas ptirah all i could say is that yesterday it was a yeshiva with reb yeshaya, and today its tragicly a yeshivah with out reb yeshaya!!!! REB YESHAYA BE A MEILITZ YOSHER FOR YOUR FAMILY AND THE BNAI HAYESHIVAH WHO SO BITTERLY MOURN YOUR LOSS and with this i conclude…… a heartbroken talmid of the yeshivah

  19. Last Motsoai Shabbos in Eretz Yisrael, many people attended the Levaya of Harav Avraham Yeshaya German, Zecher Tzadik Livracha.
This might sound strange, but I would like to think that this niftar ZT”L was also “attending” a levaya.
I guess that usually, the Niftar is at his own Levaya, to r e c e i v e his Kavod Ha-acharon, (final honor).
I feel as if his Holy Guf was there – but his “intent” was not to receive his Kavod Ha-acharon. It would have been to himself be melaveh whomever he departed from. His holy body must have been there to be “Melaveh” the other melavim, or, maybe Hashem was helping him do his “ratzon” to send off and be Melaveh his own Nishoma to its next destination, as the mitzvah of “lavaya” to one’s aquaintaince or guest is so great.
How could this holy niftar have possibly been there for his own honor?! He was surely “intending” for the honor of someone other than himself…
    Yehi Zichro Boruch
