It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of R’ Mendy Rosenberg z”l of Flatbush, Brooklyn.

R’ Mendy’s story is an inspiring one. In 2009, about 14 years ago, R’ Mendy was diagnosed with ALS. Mendy attended the Siyum Hashas in 2012. He was so moved by what he saw that when the new cycle started, he took upon himself that by the next Siyum – in 2020 – he would be part of the action as one who himself completed Shas.

And he did.

Mendy became a Daf Yomi stalwart. Mendy was at an advanced stage of ALS, one of the most difficult degenerative diseases known to man, yet he studied Daf Yomi, day after day, for seven-and-a-half years. During most of this time, his only method of communication, the only voluntary movement he still controlled, was the ability to blink his eye.

At the Siyum Hashas, 90,000 people heard Mendy Rosenberg’s story. The screen turned to Mendy, whose eyes were shining as a brocha and the “amen!” of 90,000 people rained down on him.

For many years, prior to becoming ill, R’ Mendy was a Hatzolah volunteer. He was a true baal chesed who would do anything for anyone. He was loved prior to his illness, and his battle with ALS only brought out his special nature even more, his gevurah and emunah on display for one and all.

He is survived by his wife Malky and their five children.

The levayah will be held tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Shomrei Hadas, located at 3803 14th Avenue in Boro Park, Brooklyn. The aron will then be flown to Eretz Yisroel for kevurah there.

Yehi zichro boruch.

He was one of a kind. He was a Talmid Chochom, enjoyed learning. How do I know this? I was his chavrusah in the bungallow colony, Highland Park. ( Around the time when the shmuah came in with his terrible machlah. )
( It was Daf Yomi, I think it was Aizehu Neshech ( not an EZ sugya ).)
He was good. Alive. Geshmak. Tons of friends.
They even glued together around him all this time during his machla. What a great bunch of guys. They should all be gebenched, and should continue their friendship with the family.
But my question is to Mendy…
How did you keep up your simchas hachayim?
Mendy, your’e a true lesson to all of us, all of us who can move around at our own free will, and breathe, and swallow and talk, and communicate, and….and …. without aids, and machines, and computers.
Mendy, you should continue to be an inspiration to all of us, of what is really important in life.
Mendy, I hope that a book is written about you. About your challenges, and how you overcame them, by learning to live within the very very limited means that was allowed to you,. ( How you used your eyes to type out letters on a computer screen.) Wow, wow, wow, I can go on and on and on..
