It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of R’ Moshe Orlansky z”l of Far Rockaway. He was 64 years old.

R’ Moshe lived on Cornaga Avenue and was a member of the kehillah at Yeshiva Sh’or Yoshuv, first under Rav Shlomo Freifeld zt”l and later under Rav Naftali Jaeger shlit”a.

R’ Moshe was the proprietor of the Donut Delite company, which experienced great success for many years but also face challenges that R’ Moshe handled with great bitachon and faith. 27 years ago, hooligans threw a Molotov cocktail down a vent shaft into his bakery on New Haven Avenue and later burned the business down, at which time R’ Moshe moved Donut Delite to Cedarhurst.

Donut Delite returned to Far Rockaway 16 years ago, settling in a warehouse on Redfern Avenue, with R’ Moshe supplying doughnuts and muffins to food distributors, producing 2,500 such delicacies a day.

Hurricane Sandy did great damage to the business, but R’ Moshe tried to bounce back, moving the business to Inwood.

R’ Moshe was a baal yissurim, who endured great health challenges, including diabetic ulcers, kidney failure, and cardiac arrest. R’ Moshe was actually saved by Hatzolah when most would have left him for dead, as devoted paramedics didn’t give up, even after four defibrillations proved futile.

R’ Moshe subsequently sold his business to an investor from Baltimore.

R’ Moshe showed great fortitude despite his difficulties, and he served as an example for others to emulate in this regard. His heart of gold and warm and endearing personality brought joy and happiness to everyone fortunate enough to be in contact with him.

R’ Moshe was the consummate baal chesed, using his business and anything he owned to help others. His passing leaves a void in the lives of his many friends and acquaintances.

R’ Moshe is survived by his wife, Shoshana, and their ten children.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. He was an amazing man. He would agree that, like a cat, he had nine lives, as regaled us with his latest story of his techiyas hameisim! He was a gabai’s gabai; the one that everyone looked to to see if we do or don’t say something in davening. But, anav that he was, he would always look to the Rosh Hayeshiva, never paskining on his own even though he knew the answer.
He was paratrooper in Tzahal at a time very few charedim were allowed in. ( I heard that his chasuna had to be rushed because of the general call-up right before the Yom Kippur war).
If you wanted to see how a yid is supposed to do the mitzva of kibud av you just had to see how he treated his father, a big Talmud Chacham, and his father-in-law, a seemingly poshite yid ( he was not but this isn’t the place to talk about him). He treated them both as if each one was his Rebbe Muvhak.
Did you ever feel like you’ve met a younger version of someone from a previous dor? That’s how I felt when I was privileged to speak to him. I will sorely miss him. Yeh Zichro Boruch

  3. Moshe z’l was a very special person. Just one of the nicest people you will ever meet. May he be a meilitz yosher.

  4. This article was obviously written by someone who had no idea who he was…. He was a person who was literally bigger than life! He had a tremendous chashivus for Torah and talmidei chachomim and always had a smile and good word for everyone. There are so many people who feel like they are his closest friends because of the way he treated them. He was a man who suffered way more than anyone should suffer in ten lifetimes and yet his Emuna and bitachon never wavered. He always said there had to be a reason for whatever hardship he went through he never asked why me?! There is so much to say about this impressionable man…. may he be a melitz yosher for his chashuva wife and family. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him!!
