It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of noted machzik Torah and baal chesed R’ Yissochor Dov (Beri/Albert) Reichmann z”l. He was 93.

R’ Beri was one of five brothers who led the Reichmann empire, an empire not of business, but of hachzokas haTorah and chesed on a historic level.

R’ Beri was born in Vienna, Austria, one of six siblings. The family escaped Nazi occupied Austria and Paris.

In 1954, Reb Beri arrived in Eretz Yisroel from Tangier, Morocco. The Reichmann family had escaped prior to the Holocaust by fleeing Vienna and eventually landing in Tangier. In Morocco, Reb Beri’s father, Reb Shmayahu Reichmann, had established a foreign currency business that he operated together with Reb Beri. Reb Beri got engaged to his wife, Egosah, and then got married in Eretz Yisroel.

After their wedding, the Reichmanns moved to Tangier. Egosah continued her pastime of teaching and established a school for young children, together with a young Moroccan architect named Samuel Toledano. It was in Tangier that their eldest child, Efraim, was born.

In 1959, the Reichmanns followed Reb Beri’s parents and two of his brothers to Toronto, Ontario. The Reichmanns played a pivotal role in raising Toronto to the standards of Torah excellence that it boasts today.

R’ Beri joined his younger brothers, Paul and Ralph Reichmann, who had set up business in Toronto. Paul was the president of their company, Olympia and York, and Albert served as chairman of the company, but was most known for his tzedakah and chesed work.

In the late 1980s, R’ Beri became closely involved in the cause of the Jews in the Soviet Union. He used his money and influence in an effort to enable their emigration to Eretz Yisroel.

He leaves behind an outstanding family of children and grandchildren following in his ways. His children are Reb Efraim, Reb Duddy, Mrs. Breindy Koenig and Mrs. Libby Gross.

The levaya will be held on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Khal Toras Emes/the Viewmount Shul in Toronto.

Yehi zichro boruch.
