Wayne, NJ – Rabbi Abe Friedman, the chaplain for the Teaneck Police Department, took the oath Tuesday to become a chaplain for the Passaic County Jail.
Describing Friedman as “a tremendously wise choice” for chaplain, Superior Court Judge Raymond A. Reddin administered the oath of office.
Friedman is a New Jersey State Police chaplain as well as chaplain for the Teaneck department, said Sheriff Richard Berdnik. He also is a citywide liaison to the New York Police Department and chaplain to the sheriff’s offices of Putnam and Dutchess counties in New York State.
In his role at the county jail, Friedman will provide spiritual services to inmates of all faiths, as well as to officers and other law enforcement officials. It is volunteer service; Friedman is to receive no pay, Berdnik said.
“The population of our county and jail is diverse, and it is important that we have chaplains for various religious backgrounds,” the sheriff said.
Friedman said, referring to his service to law enforcement officers, that “it is an honor to be there for you.” He said he’s honored by the appointment and that inmates and law officers alike need spiritual guidance.
