It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rabbi Aharon Chaim (Ronnie) Harari-Raful z”l. He was 55 years old.

Reb Aharon Chaim was a son of Chacham Yosef and Rabbanit Carol Ruchama Harari-Raful. Chacham Yosef is rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Ateret Torah in Brooklyn and member of the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah of Agudas Yisroel of America.

Reb Aharon Chaim was his father’s right hand, serving as second in command at Ateret Torah, directing the operation of this renowned Torah citadel, the flagship Torah institution of the Syrian Sefardic community. Reb Aharon Chaim was beloved by one and all, and never took a break from his efforts to support the yeshiva, its rabbeim, its talmidim, and its parents and friends.

Reb Aharon Chaim devoted himself to harbotzas haTorah in many ways. He founded the very first night kollel in Manhattan for the Syrian community at the Safra Shul, which spawned the creation of other similar kollelim. He established the first buses traveling from Deal, NJ to Manhattan featuring shiurim and Torah learning for commuters.

At Shaarei Zion, the flagship shul of the Syrian community, Reb Aharon Chaim established shiurim and other learning initiatives, spreading limud haTorah amongst his brethren in inspiring fashion.

Following in his father’s footsteps of placing a premium on limud haTorah, Reb Aharon Chaim was responsible for thousands of hours of Torah learning, leaving behind a legacy of total devotion to his father, to Ateret Torah, and to the greater Syrian Sefardic community.

Reb Aharon Chaim is survived by his parents, Chacham Yosef and Rabbanit Carol Ruchama; his wife, Mrs. Reina (née Dabbah) Harari-Raful; his children, Yossi, Ruchama Shames, Rachamim, Miriam Laniado, Racheli, Moshe Yehudit, Ruthy and Eli; and his siblings, Rabbi Ezra Harari-Raful, Mrs. Rachel Laniado, Rabbi Maoz Harari-Raful, Rabbi Yaakov Harari-Raful, R’ David (Ralph) Harari-Raful, Rabbi Avi Harari-Raful, Mrs. Esther BenHamou, Mrs. Aura Choueka, Mrs. Ruthy Esses, and Mrs. July Safdeye.

Reb Aharon Chaim battled illness for about 15 years with great emunah and gevurah. He passed away today.

The levayah will take place today, at 1 p.m., at Shomrei Hadas Chapels, located at 3803 14th Avenue in Boro Park, Brooklyn.

The family will be sitting shivah at 1765 East 7th Street, between Quentin Road and Avenue P, in Brooklyn, NY.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. it should be noted the Syrian community settled around Mir yeshiva in Flatbush, because the rosh yeshiva reb kalmanovich was the reason they left that region in the 1st place, they originally settled in Bensonhurst but it was the mir that saved them, otherwise the Syrians would assimilate as some did but not more than 15%.

    • Why should this be noted??? Is that the only comment you can muster up at the news of the tragic death of someone’s son???

  2. I’m not sure what you’re saying is 100 percent true. Because originally before rav ovadia yosef was crowned the leader of the sefardi world in eretz yisroel. His Rav Harari Raful was a big contender. But they decided to send him out to the states to lead; thus receiving a lot of support to run his kehilla the way he does.

  3. ANONYMOUS. RE CHECK YOUR INFORMATION. THE FOUNDING THE BASIS OF THE SYRIAN COMMUNITY WAS BECAUSE OF RABBI YAACOB KASSIN WHO THROUGH HIS RUACH SAW THE DANGERS IN THIS COUNTRY OF ASSIMIALATION. ALL THE SYRIAN RABBIS MUST SIGN AN EDICT FORBIDDING CONVERTS AND ASSORTED VARIATIONS ACCEPTABLE TO OTHERS. THIS EDICT IS RESIGNED EVERY 5 YEARS APPROX.

OF COURSE MANY OTHER GREAT RABBIS CONTRIBUTED THEIR WISDOM TO KEEP THE SYRIAN COMMUNITY TIGHT AND TOGETHER.

WITHOUT QUESTION RABBI ABRAHAM HECHT WAS A MIGHTY MAJOR FORCE TO THE SYRIANS TO MAINTAIN THEIR SEPHARDIC CULTUREEVEN THOUGH RABBI HECKT WAS FROM CHABAD. I MISS MY RABBI MY FRIEND MY ADVISOR MY CONFIDANT RABBI ABRAHAM HECHT WHO WAS A PARTNER WITH RABBI KASSIN.

  4. To Dacon9: Thank you may I make a correction (as a nephew of Rabbi Avrohom Hecht OBM):

You state “Though Rabbi Hecht was from Chabad”.

It is known to many and Knowing my uncle A”H well the truth is that BEING and DUE to the fact that Rabbi Hecht was a Chabad- Lubavitcher Chosid he therefore – with the guidance of the Rebbe ZY”A – maintained, cultivated and was Moser Nefesh – Heart and Saul 24/7 the Minhagim Lifestyle and beauty of Cong. Shaarei Tzion and the Syrian community at large. I too miss your Rabbi – my dear uncle!

    • JOSEPH HECHT. I THEN HAVE TO APOLOGIZE TO THE GREAT MRS HECHT A’H FOR NOT MENTIONING HER NAME. , RABBIS WIFE WHO WAS LIKE A MOTHER A WIFE A FRIEND TO ME ALSO. THEY HONORED ME BY STAYING AT MY HOUSE A FEW TIMES IN THE SUMMER HOME. I NOW VISUALIZE A BEAUTIFUL MAN RABBI ABRAHAM HECHT STANDING TALL WALKING TO SHUL WITH THE PRIDE OF TORAH COVERING HIM. THE RABBI SERVED OUR COUMMUNITY FOR OVER 50 YEARS, YES 24/7. HIS SHIUREEM WAS ALWAYS INSPIRATIONAL… MADE US ”THINK’ RATHER THEN BE ROBOTS OR SHEEP.YES THE COMMUNITY WHO DIDNTMISS HIM NOW MISS HIM BE SEEING NO ONE CAN FILL HIS PRESENCE. This is not to take away from our other great meaningfull Rabbis…BUT RABBI HECHTWAS A SOULMATE TOTHE SYRIAN COMMUNITY THAT HE LOVED AS WELL…

  5. Anonymous number 1 your dead wrong. I don’t know where you get your facts from. I am Syrian and I assure you the kehilla that moved to the ocean pkwy area in the 40’s was there while mir was still dreaming in Shanghai. And the reason we have almost no intermarriage (I don’t know where you got your 15% number from but whatever) is because we have a cherem against geirim that people may think is controversial but the reality is it saved the kehilla.

  6. Boruch dayan emes.
I was a classmate of his more than forty years ago in Yeshiva Torah Temima. He was generous to his classmates, always cheerful, smiling, easygoing, upbeat and friendly with a great sense of humor. At that age we don’t all appreciate the concept of me’urov im habriyos, but that is what he was, even pre-bar mitzva. I am shocked and very sorry to hear of his untimely petirah. Yehi zichroi boruch and may his family have a nechama.
