It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rabbi Dov Berish Ganz z”l, longtime dean of the Hebrew Academy of Suffolk County in Long Island.

Rabbi Ganz was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. After graduating high school, he studied Torah full-time for 15 years at Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim of Queens, NY, becoming a close talmid of the rosh yeshiva, Rav Henach Leibowitz. Rabbi Ganz grew into an outstanding talmid chochom.

From 1981 to 2001, he served as dean of the aforementioned Hebrew Academy of Suffolk County, earning respect and reverence as a talented mechanech.

In 2001, Rabbi Ganz published a wonderful sefer, Defining Humanity, exploring Torah insights into man and humanity. He also authored several other seforim.

In 2006, Rabbi Ganz and his wife, Rebecca – daughter of Rav B. C. Shloime Twerski of Denver – moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where they founded the Jewish Heritage Initiative of Cambridge (JHI). JHI promotes Gemara learning and Yiddishkeit among the local university students at Harvard and MIT.

Rabbi Ganz’s levayah was held today at JFK International Airport, after which the aron was  flown to Eretz Yisroel, where kevurah will take place on Tuesday at Har Hazeisim in Yerushalayim.

Yehi zichro boruch.
