Rabbi Eliezer Berland tested positive for the coronavirus and was hospitalized on Shabbos in serious condition.
The 83-year-old has been hooked up to a ventilator at Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital in Jerusalem, according to Hebrew media reports.
Berland is set to return to prison in October after being convicted of fraud in a plea deal in June which saw him sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Berland, the leader of the Shuvu Banim sect, already spent a year in jail before being released to house arrest in February in a demonstration of leniency by the Supreme Court, which took into account his frail state.

Eighty year olds commonly get pneumonia, which was always a leading cause of their hospitalization and intubation, even before covid. Just because someone tested positive for covid, doesn’t mean that covid was THE reason for their intubation. If you want to prove me wrong: prove that total fatalities (covid or not) are higher than the average pre-covid number; your data has to be organized by the cause of death in each row and a comparison of pre-covid average and the covid period in each column, so that if letssay cancer fatalities or pneumonia fatalities are down, you can conclude that the covid fatalities data has been padded. Use your critical thinking skills to figure out if we are being lied to by the stalinist establishment.
