rabbi-eliyahu-stewartIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rabbi Eliyahu Stewart z”l of Los Angeles.

Rabbi Stewart was born in November 1948 in New York to his parents, Mendel and Lee Stewart. They moved a few years later to Long Beach, California, and eventually settled in Beverly Hills.

Rabbi Stewart attended Hillel Academy, Rambam High School, Midrashiyat Noam in Pardes Chanah, Kerem B’Yavneh, and Yeshivas Ner Yisroel.

At Ner Yisroel, Rabbi Stewart received seimchah from the rosh yeshiva, Rav Yaakov Yitzchok Ruderman zt”l.

Rabbi Stewart was married to Bryna, nee Brown, from Philadelphia.

Rabbi Stewart was a respected mechanech and teacher and taught in the finest institutions in Los Angeles. He was full of personality and used it to develop lasting relationships with his talmidim and family and friends. He was also an inspirational baal tefillah.

The levaya was held at Cong. Shaarei Tefillah in Los Angeles yesterday, attended by hundreds of people.

He is survived by his dedicated wife, Bryna, and their six children, as well as his two sisters and younger brother.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. Baruch Dayan Haemet. My heart is filled with such sorrow as such a wonderful teacher has left this world. I became close to Rabbi Stewart while I was in public high school and trying to learn more about Judaism 4 years ago. Since then Rabbi Stewart has helped me and been there for me in so many ways. Yehi Zichro Baruch.

  2. R’ Eliyahu a’h and I were roommates in Ner Yisroel for a number of years. I can’t think of one time where he became angry or upset. He always had a smile on his face and treated everyone as though they were his closest friend – a real mentch who always showed a simchas hachayim. He set a real example for others and will be sorely missed.

  3. I will always cherish the memories he left me of our rides together. He was always so youthful with every stroke, on and off the bike, in life advice, in Torah, in his role as a dependable friend. It’s almost as if he brought his spry exuberance from his teenage years with him through his entire life. He never stopped relating to kids his age, his age at heart – like he would always claim so proudly, “I’m young at heart!”
On the eve of November 27th, a day before his birthday, his illness claimed his life.
He stayed young for us to teach us to stay young in spirit, as the lives most affected are the lives that are still developing – the lives that are still “young at heart”.
Your presence will be missed beyond the words that can be spoken. ???? ???? ????

  4. Rabbi Stewart was indeed very special, Unique, difficult to encapsulate in mere words. An Ish emes, and a real spiritual Gibor. A mechanech in the true sense

  5. As a faculty member of YTEA, I can attest that Rabbi
Stewart ZTL had an indelible impression on the students and staff. He served as a personal role model of EMES, professionalism, and Derech Eretz.
Even students who he had to discipline he treated them with respect.
A caring, fair and sensitive mechanach.
    What a loss.

  6. Rabbi Stewart ztl was a cherished friend from my days in Ner Israel.Always there for me,and showed concern for me.WE also spent quality time together in LA during “bein hazmanim”.I always looked up to him,and learned a lot from him.Yihi zichro boruch.

  7. Rabbi Stewart was a great man. Those who wrote before me said it better than I could have. If one meets even one rebbe like him in a lifetime then consider yourself very blessed.
