It is with great sadness that we report the sudden passing of Rabbi Gershon Tannenbaum zt”l, rov of Congregation Bnai Israel of Linden Heights in Boro Park, Brooklyn, and the director of Igud HaRabbanim, The Rabbinical Alliance of America. He was 66 years old.

Rabbi Tannenbaum was a beloved rov and talmid chochom. For many years, he authored the popular My Machberes column in The Jewish Press, where he chronicled the goings-on in the chareidi world, particularly events in the yeshiva and Chassidic worlds. Possessing wide-ranging knowledge of Jewish history and the personalities of the Torah world, Rabbi Tannenbaum’s columns were always full of life and insight, with enlightening commentary.

Rabbi Tannenbaum later continued his My Machberes column in the 5 Towns Jewish Times. In fact, Rabbi Tannenbaum just recently penned an article for My Machberes following the petirah of Rav Chaim Yisroel Belsky zt”l.

Born in  1949 in a DP camp in Windsheim, Germany, he later attended Yeshiva Chasan Sofer, Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim, and Yeshiva Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon. It has been said that Rabbi Tannenbaum was the first to receive semichah in Yerushalayim after it was reclaimed in 1967.

Rabbi Tannenbaum was a beloved figure in the rabbinate, and his passing has plunged his family, friends, followers and admirers into mourning.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sarah Tannenbaum, and their children, Rabbi Chaim Tannenbaum, Rabbi Yitzchok Zev Tannenbaum, Mrs. Brocha Holtzer and Mrs. Malky Haimoff.

The levayah will be held today, at noon, at Congregation Bnai Israel of Linden Heights, located at 4502 9th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Avenues, in Boro Park Brooklyn.

Yehi zichro boruch.
