Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, former Chief Rabbi of Israel, will step down tomorrow from his position as Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv.

Rabbi Lau will be turning eighty, an age where he would need a special dispensation to stay on as Chief Rabbi had he decided to stay on.

Rabbi Lau, a Holocaust survivor, was Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv from 1988 until 1993, when he was chosen to become the Chief Rabbi of the entire Israel. Rabbi Lau stepped down from his national position in 2003, retaking the helm at as Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv in 2005.
