rabbi-meir-soloveitchikRabbi Meir Solovetichik of Yeshiva University in New York has been tapped to give the invocation at the opening session of the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

Rabbi Dr. Soloveitchik is director of the Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought at Yeshiva University and associate rabbi at Manhattan’s Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun. He is a great-nephew of Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveichik, the leader of American Modern Orthodoxy until his passing in 1993.

Matzav.com reported back in July that Rabbi Soloveitchik was being head-hunted for the post of British chief rabbi with the behind-the-scenes backing of the current chief rabbi, Lord Jonathan Sacks. Rabbi Sacks is due to step  down in September 2013.

Rabbi Soloveichik, who is in his mid 30s, is known for his extraordinary intellect and for his charisma as a public speaker.

The head of New York’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, has been chosen to give the benediction on the night Mitt Romney accepts the Republican presidential nomination.

  1. Sounds like a fascinating person! Who is his father? Who was his grandfather? Where did he learn? Who did he marry?

If he is anything like his great-uncle he might be just the person to be able to communicate to the modern crowd but still stay true to the mesorah of the Torah world. We need someone like that to tamp down the Chovevei place and the Maharatchkes. Anyone identified as an orthodox talmid chacham lacks credence in those circles but an heir to the throne of Rav “JB” will have the ability to set the record straight!

  2. It won’t work. Orthodox Jews generally will continue to vote Republican. Non-Orthodox Jews will continue generally to vote Democratic. This sort of publicity angle fools nobody. What it might do is lose him the (reported) backing of Rabbi Sacks, who is against uncontrolled free-market capitalism and for inclusion, not exclusion.

We are getting very chummy with the Republican party, and forgetting the posuk in Avos that says not to get too friendly with the ruling authorities, because they are only nice to us when it’s to their advantage, and will dump us at their convenience. Politicians are out for themselves and the people who pay their campaign expenses. Even counting Adelson, we aren’t that big a percentage. I hope we don’t get a rude awakening.

  3. To #4

Aha, and the Democrats don’t posses a threat that you talk of? Its only the Republicans? You’re being illogical! If you haven’t awoken during the last 4 years, nothing will!

  4. OLDTIMER, So you got friendly with obama.Nothing good came from it. The republicans havent yet been voted in therefore they arent “THE” ruling party,
the democrates are the ruling party. I dont write you off as an oldtime, I write you off as a tolerant socialist. If the is no wealth then there is nothing to spread around and right now obama made sure there is no wealth and you are dependent on the goverment….
enjoy your socialism and destruction of USA.
I read right into your deception. adid you step deeper into it? ohh your a registered communist…… sorry i didnt know…

  5. I have been working to try to get the Republican Jewish Coalition to create rabbis for Romney. I think we give the wrong impression to the public when there are rabbis for Obama and none for Romney. I don’t represent an organization and my views are personal. Having been involved in political elections and worked with many candidates as a media coach I can assure you that the media is interested in hearing if there are rabbis willing to put their names on list for Romney. If you are interested join me in speaking out. Please connect with other rabbis from other movements and have them contact me.’The “Rabbis for Obama” announcement came out of the Obama campaign. SOME want to support Romney, but won’t sign unless we get some cooperation from the Romney people, not the RJC. The Romney people have to match the Obama people to some extent. Those of you who feels this way are asked to speak out to the Republicsan Party. I am one lonely individual who will get no where without your help. we need money for ads.Maybe Mr. Adelson can help.
