It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rabbi Nachman Zakon zt”l of Yerushalayim.

Rabbi Zakon, a veteran mechanech and author, was the director of Yeshiva Teachers Institute, a chinuch training program for kollel men, and of Chinuch Habonim Seminars Yerushalayim.

In his youth, Rabbi Zakon learned at Yeshiva Torah Vodaath in New York and at Yeshiva Ner Yisroel in Baltimore.

Over three decades ago, Rabbi Zakon and his family moved to Eretz Yisroel, first settling in Zichron Yaakov, where Rabbi Zakon joined a local kollel and became close to Rav Nachman Bulman.

The Zakons subsequently moved to Har Nof, Yerushalayim. Rabbi Zakon began to teach in local chadorim, and together with the Bostoner Rebbe of Har Nof, Rabbi Zakon founded the first cheder for Anglo families in Yerushalayim. Over the years, through his teaching seminars, he trained numerous rabbeim and mechanchim, sharing his unique insights into the world of chinuch.

Rabbi Zakon was also an accomplished author, penning the bestselling The Weekly Parashah, published by ArtScroll.  His other published titles include The Weekly Parashah Series Haggadah, Treasure from Sinai, Let’s Go to the Sun and the Moon, and 2,000 Years of Jewish Experience. He also coauthored The Story of Rebbetzin Henny Machlis with his wife, veteran writer and editor Mrs. Miriam Zakon. Rabbi Zakon was a favorite of Mishpacha Jr. readers for his “Zooming Around with Zeidy Zakon” column, which featured a written guided tour of various important religious and historic sites around Eretz Yisroel.

Rabbi Zakon is survived by his wife, Mrs. Miriam Zakon, and their family.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. What can’t be carried over in an article is how devoted he was to his students, how he wanted future mechanchim to see each child as having special qualities that have to be nurtured.

Even harder too carry over his devotion to his family, known as the “fun uncle”, and his assistance with his mother in law a”h.
