Oleksandr and Rhymma Zelensky, the Ukrainian president’s parents, cannot understand why their son Volodymyr wanted the position he holds and are avoiding publicity like a plague.

But Rav Liron Ederi, the Chabad rov of their hometown Kryvyi Rih, told the Israeli Yated something about the Jewish couple.

Beginning by saying that Oleksandr once prevailed on his son to foil legislation to ban kosher meat production, Rav Ederi quipped, “What good is having the president for a son if not for that?”

Rav Ederi added that the president’s father once designed a computer class curriculum for his city’s Jewish school and helped promote a plan to get government funding for Jewish history lessons by making them part of the official curriculum in Jewish schools.

Ederi concluded by mentioning that Oleksandr arranged for him to meet Zelensky after he became president in 2019.

Zelensky keeps his religious identity on the backburner, once jokingly telling an interviewer, “The fact that I am Jewish barely makes 20 in my long list of faults.”
