It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rabbi Yeshaya Dovid Halevi Waxman z”l.

Reb Yeshaye Dovid grew up in Williamsburg and later became a kollel yungerman when those learning in kollel were few and far between in the United States.

Reb Yeshaya Dovid was part of an elite chaburah at Bais Medrash Elyon, residing in Monsey, NY, before the town even boasted street lights. The most illustrious bochurim attended this elite yeshiva, under the guidance of Rav Reuven Grozovsky zt”l and the warm hashgachah of Rav Yisroel Chaim Kaplan zt”l.

In 1957, Reb Yeshaya Dovid married his wife, Chana, who was was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1935, a daughter of Max (Meir) and Rosy (Rayzcha) Adler, from Vienna and Germany, respectively. With Hashgachah Pratis, the family escaped Germany and met up in Amsterdam. Arriving on these shores in March 1939, the Adlers transplanted their family to Washington Heights. Chana was amongst the very first students of Breuer’s elementary school. For high school, she attended the newly-formed Bais Yaakov of Williamsburg and forged a close bond with Rebbetzin Vichna Kaplan a”h and her staff of rabbeim and moros. With love for Torah, Chana taught kindergarten at Breuer’s following seminary.

After Reb Yeshaya Dovid and Chana married, they desired to spend the first years of marriage in kollel. What began as a three-year dream ended up as a 19-year experience in kollel. They dwelled in Monsey in a building complex that housed the Breslauers, Pressmans, Tabaks, Waldmans and Waxmans. These families brought Torah and chesed to Monsey during those early years.

For 59 years, Reb Yeshaya Dovid and his wife infused the Monsey community with their vibrant presence. Mrs. Waxman passed away on their 59th anniversary, 22 Shevat 2016.

At his wife’s levayah, Reb Yeshaya Dovid thanked Hashem for the almost 60 healthy years together that they were graced with.

Reb Yeshaya Dovid spent his life devoted to learning Torah. A talmid chochom of note, nothing brought him greater pleasure than a blatt Gemara and a novel Torah thought. His breadth of knowledge was impressive, and his incisive insights and chiddushim reflected years of hasmadah and plumbing the depths of Shas and sifrei halacha and machshavah.

Reb Yeshaya Dovid’s Torah values carried over to his five illustrious children: R’ Pinchus Gershon of Lakewood, Yaakov of Minneapolis, Simcha of Monsey, Sarah Golding of the West Side, and Rivky Marcus of Brooklyn.

Reb Yeshaya Dovid always wanted his family to ascend the ladder of Torah and middos and succeed in whichever field they were in. He was so proud of each of his grandchildren, following in his illustrious ways, and merited to behold many great-grandchildren.

While Reb Yeshaya Dovid sat and learned Torah, Mrs. Waxman served as a teacher at Breuer’s High School, Bais Rochel High School, and Bais Mikroh. She was also General Studies principal at Bais Yaakov of Monsey.

Children, grandchildren, neighbors and newly-married couples were all recipients of thousands of packages of prepared food that emerged from the Waxman home. The many hours of cooking and baking at the Waxman home, guided by Mrs. Waxman with Reb Yeshaya Dovid’s support, were all about making everyone else’s life easier. The Waxmans’ enjoyment in giving paralleled everyone’s joy of receiving.

The levayah will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, July 17, at 11 a.m., at Bais Medrash of Monsey, located at 2 Harvest Court in Monsey, NY.

Yehi zichroh boruch.
