yisrael-landsmanThis past Friday, a large crowd gathered at Shomrei Hadas Chapels in Boro Park, Brooklyn, for the levaya of Rabbi Yisrael Landsman zt”l, a dynamic mechanech and mekarev who touched thousands over his lifetime.

He was just 54 years old.

With a soul that poured forth love of Hashem and the Jewish people, he dedicated his life to give and share with others. He had a petting zoo that was set up to educate about halachos that apply to animals. He taught students about the Korban Pesach and the laws of tzaar baalei chaim, and he learned shechita, safrus and milah so that he could teach these practices to others and help them make a living. He trained hundreds upon hundreds of people in shechitah and safrus, always focused on enhancing the lives of others.

Anyone whoever met him knew that he had a special neshamah. His untimely passing after years of suffering from a dreaded combination of cancer has left a huge void for all of Klal Yisroel.

The Landsman home was known for its chessed and large number of Shabbos guests. R’ Yisrael would share beautiful stories, divrei Torah and songs, uplifting his guests.

His life was a constant expression of Kiddush Shem Shamayim.

Rav Yisrael was an expert ventriloquist. He would make his puppet talk and bring simcha to crowds. His jokes would teach halacha and Torah hashkafa. He would teach his audience how to make berachos by having the puppet make a shehakol and take a drink.  R’ Yisrael had a magnetic personality and used his talents to bring about a Kiddush Hashem. He was a master performer and teacher.

R’ Yisrael dedicated his life to spreading Torah and simcha throughout the world. He was a true servant of Hashem in everything that he did and he was happy to share this “trick” with others. It was his secret to life and his contagious simchas hachaim. [Click here for a video of R’ Yisrael.]

R’ Yisrael’s life was filled with suffering and challenges. He lost one child to crib death and his precious daughter Nechama after a five-year battle with cancer. He faced parnasah challenges and his own health issues. Yet, he lived every day and every moment with a smile and with the most contagious simcha. He knew how to juggle his family responsibilities and his own learning times.

Upon the tragic passing of his dear daughter, Nechama,R’ Yisrael led his family with great emunah and dedication. He showed them all how to mourn and how to never question Hashem. He spoke at the sheloshim seuda and said that we don’t have any questions about what Hashem does. “We thank Him for giving us Nechama,” he said, “and we thank Him for all that she accomplished in her short life, and how much love and ahavas Hashem she taught everyone who met her.”

Rabbi Landsman dedicated his life for Klal Yisrael. He loved every Jew and only wanted to share and give whatever he was able to give to others.

A levaya for R’ Yisrael was held in Yerushalayim and kevurah took place on Har Hazeisim.

May he be a meilitz yosher for all those who knew him and may his avodas hakodesh continue to serve as an inspiration to Yidden across the world.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. Yidden all over the world are asked to continue reciting Tehillim and learn Torah as a Zechus for the famous Magid of the generation Harav Shlomo Brevda Shlita, who is in need of a Refuah Sheleimah. His condition is critical.

The name for Tehillim is: “Shlomo Leib ben Miriam”

  2. people-especially tzaddikim- are continuing to be niftar (die) younger & younger R”L but NOONE is ready to take the message from hashem to start doing teshuva & return to Hashem-so all these tragedies can come to an end & Mashiach can come

VERY SAD THAT WE CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN TO US its only our fault & nobody else FACE REALITY & do something already so this tzaros can end.

    MAY MASHIACH COME ASAP

To a man I called Totty- Reb Yisroel Rofoel Ben Moshe HaKohen.

He was a very caring loving person. There are just so many memories of him from the Pesach I met him over 14 years ago, to his home in Ramat Shlomo, back in USA as he was caring for his daughter Nechama a’h.

He was always happy and giving. To Share one story. I was changing yeshivas and had a stomachache and did not want to move that day. He came into my room and nicely pushed me up and told me when you have kids you can not stop if your stomach bothers you. SO move now … I had many hardships since then however sometimes I hear that voice and keep going keep -moving because life is just to precious to waste. He loved life and fought to the last breath…
His real and adopted families will surely miss him with the rest of Klal Yisroel

  8. Yes, R Yisroel was a Talmid of Ner Yisroel in Baltimore. Yehi zichro baruch. When he moved to Eretz Yisroel, his house was home to so many of the talmidim of our yeshiva. He was a father figure to many, love and care gushing from him. When he decided upon a path he was virtually unstoppable. He set out to master shas. I was witness to his efforts towards finishing shas the very first time, as he set for himself the gruelling pace of covering seven blatt a day!

  9. Anyone who ever met Izzy knew that he was a truly unique individual. A one of a kind! His love of Hashem, Torah and Mitzvohs knew no bounds. He incorporated all these into every thing he did. His smile and bitachone remained steadfast no matter what was going on in his life. His answer to any challenge was always “Hashem ya’azoar”. I will always smile when I think of him because he was always smiling. I will never forget finding a “shechted” duck in my refrigerator with a note- “cook and enjoy” or when he lost his iguana in my house and we found it under the dryer! My family and all of klal Yisroel will so greatly miss Izzy;what a tragic loss. Baruch dayan emet.
