A new letter from rabbonim in Eretz Yisroel instructs kashrus organizations to follow the ruling of the Chazon Ish and ybl”c Rav Nissim Karelitz that a fish that is not complete (fillet, etc.) needs an examination of its simanim, and tevius ayin is not sufficient unless the fish is whole.

Accordingly, the She’eris Yisroel kashrus organization has begun to examine fish while they are still intact and whole, and thus there is no need to check the simanim afterwards.

Rav Sariel Rosenberg, Rav Shevach Zvi Rosenblatt and Rav Menachem Mendel Lubin signed a letter issuing a warning and a special call to the public.

“We have already informed the Torah world that the ruling of our rabbonim is that it is forbidden to eat fish that have not been checked, with each fish being examined individually, and we do not rely on rov (majority) or chazakah

“And now,” the rabbonim wrote in their letter, “the supervision of the Badatz of She’aris Yisroel managed to bring in fish from abroad that were inspected by trusted mashgichim from the Badatzim, who saw every fish and its simanimwhile it was whole. We wish to be mechazeik all those who are working to remove this obstacle from the houses of Klal Yisroel. And we call on the other kashrus committees to join in.”

Rav Dovid Aryeh Morgenstern, one of the rabbonim of the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood, who is a talmid of Rav Yosef Shalim Elyashiv, added to the letter by stating that “it is clear that the kashrus committees must carefully examine the simanim of each fish. They should not rely on the customers checking for themselves (especially since customers do not always know that the obligation to examine the fish rests on them)…”
