jewish-intermarraigeThe Knesset Aliyah and Absorption Committee today conducted a discussion on activities by the World Zionist Organization to prevent assimilation – and how more activity was needed to ensure that Jews remain affiliated with the Jewish people.

MK Danny Danon, chairman of the committee, said that “150,000 Jews assimilate every year and are lost to the Jewish people. This committee is committed to Zionist activity on behalf of the Jewish people and I call on government offices to use the services of the WZO, especially advancing the work of the WZO on Hebrew ulpanim for adults. The committee also urges ministries to fund all groups that sponsor and promote aliyah.”

Avraham Duvdevani, chairman of the World Zionist Federation, said that “the Federation has taken upon itself to promote aliyah, education for Zionism, and settlement within the 1948 armistice lines (the “green line”). There can be no Zionism without aliyah, and we thus work to aid aliyah from around the world and encouraging use of Hebrew in the diaspora, based on the belief that learning Hebrew encourages identification with Zionism and Judaism.”

National Union Chairman MK Ya’akov Katz (Ketzaleh) said at the meeting that each day, the Jewish people lose between 350 and 500 individuals. “We have had enough of the mediocrity of the Jewish Agency and World Zionist Federation,” he said. “The Prime Minister must make recruiting Jews to return to Israel a priority. We need $5 billion to fund an effort where representatives will go from community to community and bring Jews home.”

MK Marina Solodkin (Kadima) said that “tens of thousands of elderly immigrants to Israel, many from the former Soviet Union, want to learn Hebrew and have no place to study. They need to be taken care of,” she said.

The chairman of the Jewish Agency, George Schwartz, said at the meeting that “we are increasing our efforts to encourage aliyah from the West. We are training all Jewish Agency representatives, including those involved in education, to encourage aliyah. If at once there were dozens of people in the Jewish Agency working to encourage aliyah, today there are hundreds.”

  1. I have a problem when the word assimilation is not defined. Here in the article it only means to speak Hebrew and calling yourself Jewish.

For Torah Jews assimilation means any disloyalty to Torah even a seemingly unimportant value or principle.

I prefer a Jew that does not know Hebrew but is loyal to Torah than one that graduates from the ulpan only to go to the bars of Tel Aviv to
proclaim his Jewish identity. Do not be confused assimilation is real and serious!

  2. well the reform and conservative came out in israel for going to mixed school just dont marry them howzat how do they think assimilation happens

  3. Albert that is step 2 and goes without say. The bottom line is if people are aware that they are Jewish and have some affiliation with Eretz Yisroel and Judaism they will stay closer to the flock and be available and open to kiruv.

  4. I have a problem with the use of the work “Holocaust” in contexts other than what occurred during WWII. It appears that only the editors used the word and not any others involved in the article.

  5. Years ago, before the internet and before all evil sprouting in lightening speed, even though American Jews (usually reform, conservative, reconstructionist) and who knew very little in Torah; there still was much, much less assimilation, intermarriage than there is today. No matter how Torah uneducated the typical Jew was, he/she never thought of marrying a non-Jew and many times, parents would literally disown that child if he/she did so, even sitting shiva. Outside of Hollywood crowd, it was very rare to hear of intermarriage. The breakdown of world society has affected the Jewish world to a great extent, and, of course, the lack of Jewish education amongst the typical American Jew has been like a plague. The state of Israel together with its ‘friends’ is now doing all it can to outdo even the rest of the world in trying to tear down the Jewishness and holiness of Eretz Hakodesh. We pray that Moshiach shows up in a blink of an eye.
