A white woman was recorded calling the police on an 8-year-old girl selling bottled water without a permit, according to a viral video posted on Saturday.
Twitter user @_ethiopiangold posted on Twitter Saturday afternoon that her younger cousin was selling bottled water when a woman she dubbed “Permit Patty” intervened.
The 15-second video took off on social media, notching more than 641,000 views as of Saturday afternoon.
“Yeah and illegally selling water without a permit,” the woman is seen telling the police.
The girl’s cousin responds, “On my property.”
The white woman then says, “It’s not your property.”
But the woman, Alison Ettel, who spoke to HuffPost later in the day, said that “this has no racial component to it” and claims she only “pretended” to call the police.
“They were screaming about what they were selling,” she said. “It was literally nonstop. It was every two seconds, ‘Come and buy my water.’ It was continuous and it wasn’t a soft voice, it was screaming.”
“I had been putting up with this for hours, and I just snapped,” Ettel said. Ettel admitted she regrets her actions and says that she has since received threats online, telling reporters she feels “discriminated” against.
