Rahm Emanuel has won a hard-fought runoff race for Chicago mayor, with challenger Jesus “Chuy” Garcia making a concession call late Tuesday.
With 83.5 percent of precincts reporting, the mayor had 55.7 percent of the vote to Garcia’s 44.3 percent. Turnout was around 44 percent, according to the city’s Board of Election Commissioners.
Emanuel’s win is also a victory for establishment Democrats over progressives. The mayor raised nearly $23 million to the little more than $6 million Garcia collected.
Emanuel hit Garcia hard with more than 20 different TV spots that aired more than 7,000 times while also trying to soften his aggressive image. Read more at the Chicago Tribune.
