Rep. Charles Rangel took the lead by 990 votes over Democratic contender Adriano Espaillat on Saturday.

According to the publication, The New York City Board of Elections counted thousands of provisional ballots and absentee ballots on Friday, which had been deemed invalid but were later reinstated.

Rangel finished with a total of 18,940 votes, while Espaillat had 17,950. The win will give Rangel an advantage when bidding for a 22nd term in the House.

Rangel and Espaillat have been going head-to-head for the 13th Congressional District which is made up of mostly Latino residents. It includes the northern part of Manhattan and the Bronx as well.

Due to the overwhelming Democratic status of the District, the winner of the primary is seen as the front-runner in the general election.

Espaillat claims that Spanish-speaking voters were harassed when trying to cast their vote and has also asked that the results not be certified until a State Supreme Court Justice has given permission.

Due to this, The New York Times says that Rangel’s team has not yet declared victory.

Both Rangel’s and Espaillat’s campaign have not made any comments.
