The Centers for Disease and Control says a rare but potentially severe condition that causes weakness or even paralysis in the arms and legs is on the rise, mainly affecting children.
Between August 2014 and August 2018, the CDC received 362 cases of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM).
The Minnesota Department of Health recently announced six AFM cases have been classified in its state and were reported in children under 10 years old, living in the Twin Cities, central Minnesota and northeastern Minnesota.
There is no specific treatment for AFM, but doctors might recommend certain interventions, depending on the case.
The MDH recommends parents take basic steps to avoid infections and stay healthy:
- Wash your hands frequently
- Cover your cough
- Stay home if you are sick
- Stay up to date on vaccinations
- Protect your children from mosquito bites if you are outside

Acute Flaccid Myelitis is another way of describing Polio. But this form is not caused by the Polio virus nor is it caused by EVD68 as many of the cases tested negative for EV68. It has been shown to be caused by HPV vaccine most notably in the famous case of Colton Berret may he rest in peace. Dr Suzanne Humphreys has pointed out that by excluding various forms of AFM back in the 50s when the Salk vaccine came out, the government was able to claim that the Salk vaccine was effective in preventing paralytic Polio and reducing prevalence simply by changing the diagnostic definition of Polio to exclude AFM and TM. As we can see from this headline, “infantile paralysis” never went away, it simply had its name changed from Polio to AFM.
I have been told that there are occasional cases of polio infections in underdeveloped countries but they dont cause paralysis nowadays and no one understand why. I traveled to india where I heard it and being not a medical professional I have no access to data, let alone understanding. Perhaps you can comment?
