rabbi-shlomo-amarIsrael’s Sefardic Chief Rabbi, Rav Shlomo Moshe Amar, met with the country’s president, Shimon Peres, this morning. Part of the meeting focused on the effort by the Knesset to formulate a bill for the widespread drafting of yeshiva bochurim and its implications on the Torah-observant public.

During his meeting with the president, Rav Amar asked the Israeli public not to demonstrate “senseless hatred” against the chareidi population.

“The Soton is dancing between us,” said Rav Amar, “and from time to time, he adds fuel to the fire to fan the flamed of inextinguishable hatred.”

Rav Amar, born in 1948, has been the Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel since his appointment in 2003. Rav Amar was born in Casablanca, Morocco, and immigrated to Israel in 1962 at age 14. Before his appointment as co-Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rav Amar had served as the head of the Petach Tikva Bais Din and was elected chief rabbi of Tel Aviv in 2002, the first sole Chief Rabbi of the city.
