The Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem, Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Amar, issued a harsh letter today against Jews ascending Har Habayis, in light of the fact that many Jews ascended on Tisha B’Av, the Jewish national commemoration of the destruction of the Bais Hamikdash.

“There are people in our generation whose passionate love of the Land of Israel takes their good judgement from them, such that it is easy for them to commit a grave offense for which there is fear that a karet prohibition is entailed, as long as we don’t let go of our hold on the most sacred place for the People of Israel.”

“This grave offense not only will not help, but may even make things worse, G-d forbid.” Read more at Arutz Sheva.

  1. This is an important statement — for those who follow Rav Amar and the Rav Ovadia Yosef family and Shas and the Agudah Gedolim.

For everyone else, let them follow what their own Rabbonim say on the matter and let them read the detailed analyses that have examined this issue in depth.

Rav Meir Mazuz of Bnei Brak (who is often quoted on Matzav!), Rav Yakov Meidan Of Har Etzion, and Rav Dov Lior of Chevron are among the prominent Rabbonim who see the issue quite differently than Rav Amar, who is politically aligned with the Yosef family and the strong stand they have taken, in deference to Rav Ovadia.

  2. Nearly all the leading Rabbanim of Israel prohibit any and all entry to the Har HaBayis (Temple Mount). I have a copy of a Hodaah VeAzharah document they signed fifty years ago and reaffirmed with their signatures three years ago.

A much better way to anticipate the Geulah Shleimah is to visit one of the Web sites on Bais HaMikdash III. My work [based on RASHI on Sefer Yechezkel/Ezekiel, Chap. 40-43] can be seen at: http://crdesignable.com/our-special-mitzvah/

    • Yiyasher kochecha, Avraham Yaakov, for your halachic advice as to what’s “a much better way”!

Those who choose to follow your psak (and those of the Rabbonim you follow) should follow you — and those who choose to follow the Rabbonim I mentioned above should follow them!

And, if you would like to write a detailed response to Rav Mazuz et al, explaining why they should ALSO follow your opinion, mah tov u’mah nayim!

      • They are only discussing the standard issue of the Chiyuv Kores for those who ascend the Har H’Bayis.

Even without it anyone who goes onto the Har H’Bayis is a Rodef for the danger he is putting other Yidden into.

And all for the sake of what?

What value can a Tefilah have if it can endanger the lives of other Yidden?

        • 1)There is no chiyuv koreis for ascending har habais. What matters is where on har habais and the tahora status of the visitor.
2)Perhaps it is you who is a rodeif: the islamonazis are inherently violent due to their ideology, not because of any possible provocation, and can not be appeased by definition. Anyone who tries to appease, is not just a clueless fool, not only diverts attention from the real issue of the islamonazi imperialism, but actually directly provokes the islamonazi violence by the same principle as showing a weakness to a wild animal invites an attack. Remember, it was Neville Chamberlain’s “peace” that gave Hitler crucial time to rearm and launch the horrors of WW2.

  3. The entire har habais, mashma even before cheil, gets a brand new isur to ascend, and bekoreis?! All these chidushim make you dizzy. How about just following our regular rishonim, acharonim and non political poskim. Did Rav Moshe prohibit going onto the entire har habais?! If Rav Amar wants to discover new isurim, he should justify his position with a real scholarly analysis. Otherwise, this is not a halachic, but a political opinion.

    • Yes Reb Moshe did assur it in orech chiam chelek 3:113 if you read the whole teshuvah from beginning to end without personal bias of wanting to go up to har HaBayis

      • Without conceding to your claim, as I have to check your source first, did Rav Moshe categorically assur it or alts sofeik?! Stating it’s better not to go because we are not sure of the exact borders is not the same as stating that whoever goes is a sheigets and deserves koreis.

  4. “The Jews do not want, in any way, to take that which isn’t theirs. And they certainly don’t want to contest the rights of the other inhavitants to the places held by them in which they regard with honor and coniser holy. And in particular there is no foundation to the rumor that the Jews want to acquire the “Temple Mount”. On the contrary, from the time that, because of our sins, we were exiled from our land, and our Holy Temple was destroyed, and we have been lacking the purity required by the Torah, it is forbidden for any man of Israel to set foot upon the grounds of the “Temple Mount”, until the coming of the righteous Meshiach, who with the spirit of the L-rd, which will hover over him, will rule righteously, for the good of all creation, and will return to us the purity required by the Torah.

    • Since when did Jews relinquish har habais?! It’s one thing to say we are temporarily exiled. Quite another is stating that har habais is no longer ours – that sounds like a kefira.

  5. Whilst the Magon Avrohom prohibits any entry, I recall the מאירי clearly saying that the minhag in his times was to ascend to the Hard habayis.

    • Don’t bring facts to a propaganda fight!
People just ignore historical relevance to issues. Like the past was a alien fantasy far removed from this planet
