Rav Avraham Yosef publicly criticized the growing practice of drinking coffee inside shuls during Shacharis, calling the phenomenon deeply inappropriate and widespread in many communities.
Speaking on Kol Chai Radio, Rav Yosef addressed a listener’s question regarding whether a tired individual may drink coffee during the zemiros section before Baruch She’amar. His response was unequivocal: “It’s unthinkable,” he said. “If someone wants to drink coffee, they can do so outside the shul—not inside. A shul is not a coffee shop.”
The rov expressed concern over what he called “a spreading affliction,” lamenting that the practice has taken root in too many kehillos. “This blight has spread through numerous communities,” he said, adding that those who feel the need for coffee should step outside: “Drink outside. Open a window and listen to the davening from there.”
Rav Yosef emphasized the sanctity of a shul, reminding listeners that “the place is holy. We call it a mikdash me’at. It’s forbidden to use it as a shortcut. Idle chatter is not allowed there. You may not stroll back and forth inside it.”
He was especially critical of those who engage in such behavior while wearing a tallis and tefillin. “Is it appropriate to behave like you’re in your own living room while wearing tefillin?” he asked rhetorically.
Rav Yosef clarified that there is only one legitimate reason to eat or drink in a shul: “For the sake of Torah study, to prevent bittul Torah. But not during tefillah.”

finally!!!
its out of control i see everyday young people(not those old and sick who have an excuse) walk into shule with their tallis bag in one hand and a coffee in the other
what a disgrace
Agree. Now ban collectors who disturb davening even approaching the shliach tzibbur even as he’s saying sof chapter out loud. Another system should be implemented. They have no respect for the kahal.
Ban collecting during tefilos??? Are you Jewish and have a heart??? Unless a collector is loud and/or hostile let him walk around and collect. Nobody is forcing you to give him. Leave a bunch of whatever denomination you normally give on the table and you won’t be bothered. Shame on you, a yid, to suggest an ani, or a Jew with a pressing need should be banned from collecting in shul where most yidden are present.
Where and when would you suggest that he collect? When you are running out after davening ? Or in your house for your dollar?
You have a heart. Someone may be davening for a family emergency with kavana and now is disturbed, and with little machines now too. At least wait till after chazaras hashatz. If the collector is starving, then everybody will donate instantly, it’s not an emergency. Collect before and after davening. The coffee drinker is disturbing no one. Have a heart ! Somebody may be davening for a sick child, you collector can wait 10 minutes.
Unless it’s a Hatzala or Shomrim call, what heter is there to disturb tfillos ? No one is permitted to collect in the Kosel area, only in the back plaza, for a reason. How many collectors need money instantly ?
@ mordechai
Tell you what : If they have bitachon they wouldn’t need to squeeze 20 shuls into 10 minutes with their cars idling.
They chat it up about this or that cause while people are davening and disrupt.
Let them come before or wait as people leave the shul. Let shuls appoint a gabbai especially for this. Assuming their causes are genuine, a solution should be found. Silent coffee drinkers are a nuisance, but groups of collectors talking, getting change, etc. are ok?
I thought it’s a makom kodosh for us all.
Don’t lecture when I leave shul ! Do you know my issues ? Shame.
Spoken like a true am ha’aretz.
R’ Mordechai, would you allow collectors in during learning in Beis Midrash or during a shiyur ? If not, why not ?
Maybe with decaffeinated coffee you can be Maykal?
Readers who use shul aisles as their personal athletic track to pace up and down, here and there, disregarding how much they disturb positioned mispallelim, should take note of this fine article’s message.
And those who daven quite loud , shouting down the bal tfilah.
They might be Karliner Chassidim.
The cell phones ringing and being checked is a far more serious plague. Jews are dying! I have a smartphone for business. It never comes to schul with me.
