avrohom-chaim-spitzerIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Avrohom Chaim Spitzer zt”l, rov of Khal Ohr Hachaim in Boro Park, at the age of 83.

Rav Spitzer was one of the senior poskim and rabbonim of the Boro Park Chassidic community, and was held in high regard by admorim and rabbonim of the community, both for his wide breadth of Torah knowledge and his steadfast commitment to mesoras Yisroel.

Rav Spitzer was marbitz Torah for many decades, at his shul at 49th Street and 14th Avenue and elsewhere, delivering thousands of shiurim and penning many well-received seforim. His photographic memory and unbridled hasmadah were well known. He wrote a set of seforim called Chayei Avraham.

Rav Spitzer was born in Besermien, Hungary, to his parents, Binyomin Zev and Mechtche Spitzer. During the war, Avrohom Chaim, a young bar mitzvah bochur, was in the city of Bater, Hungary, while his father was able to escape war-torn Europe for American shores, hoping to bring over his family in short order. Mechtche and the family survived the war and reunited with their father in America. Mechtche passed away in New Square in the late 1970s.

Rav Spitzer was extremely close to his rebbi, Rav Michoel Ber Weismandl zt”l, whose example and teachings inspired him every day of his life. He maintained close relationships with many gedolim, both Chassidic and Litvish, including the Satmar Rov, Rav Moshe Feinstein, the Skulener Rebbe and others.

Rav Spitzer learned in Bais Medrash Elyon in Monsey under Rav Reuven Grozovsky zt”l and was a talmid of the Shoproner Rov zt”l as well. He later served as a rebbi in Yeshiva of Brooklyn and in the Viener Yeshiva.

Rav Spitzer and his wife, Rebbetzin Leah, a daughter of Rav Yosef Dov Segal of Montreal, first resided in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where Rav Spitzer was a Viener dayan, and they then moved to the newly founded Shikun Skver near Monsey. They ultimately moved to Boro Park, Brooklyn.

The levaya was held last night at Rav Spitzer’s shul in Boro Park and kevurah took place in Shikun Skver.

Rav Spitzer is survived by his wife, Rebbetzin Leah, and their children, R’ Yussi Spitzer, Mrs. Zlaty Weinberger, R’ Yaakov Mayer Spitzer, R’ Elya Zvi Spitzer, R’ Yecheskel Spitzer, Mrs. Fraida Chassan, R’ Yisroel Moshe Duvid Spitzer, R’ Shimon Shulem Spitzer and Mrs. Chaya Tzirel Baumwolspiner.

Yehi zichro boruch.
