candleIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Avrohom Jacobovitch zt”l, longtime rebbi at Yeshiva Yesodei Hatorah in Toronto. He was in his upper ninties.

Rav Jacobovitch was the founding rebbi at Yesodei Hatorah in 1952 and went on to teach at the mosad for some 60 years.

He retired one year ago, when he suffered a stroke while abroad.

He taught multiple generations of bnei Torah at Yeshiva Yesodei Hatorah, which is under the leadership of Rav Asher Bornstein.

The levayah will be held today, at 6 p.m., at the Yesodei building on Caribou Road in Toronto.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. Probably the oldest Breslover Chassid in North America. His correspondence with the great Rav Shmuel Horowitz make up much of the Sefer Michtevei Shmuel. He traveled to Uman for Rosh Hashanah still in his nineties. Beloved and respected by all, he will be greatly missed BDE.

  2. The levaya was at the CURRENT Yesodei Hatorah building on Caribour Road with an attendance of 600+ people. A large amount for Toronto.

  3. He was a Tzaddik Yesod Olam! He was from the early Torontonians who helped make the city a Makom Torah that it’s become- together with the likes of the late Mr. Morley Orbach and Mr. Rubinstein. He literally taught hundreds upon hundreds of talmidim- the later kids in his class were GRANDSONS of his former talmidim! We all know the famous story of the Vilna Gaon, saying he owes his gratitude to his Aleph-Bais rebbe… the same can surely be said by hundreds (including myslef). He was zoche to hundreds of ehrliche eineklach- all whom inherited his warmth and simchas hachaim.

May he be a meiletz yosher to his family, the city of Toronto, and all of Klal Yisroel!

  4. As a talmid of this tzadik yesod haolom in his first class in toronto in in 1952 I mourn for the loss of a person who was mashpiah on me whenver i met and spoke to him for the past 64 yrs. His emuna and bitochon resonated thru his warm welcome and smile to everyone whom he was in contact with. May he be a melitz yosher to his thoushands of talmidim, his family and klall yisroel

  5. I went to be Menachem Avel him when he sat Shiva for his son in Lakewood. I introduced myself and asked him if he remembered me as being his Talmid 28 years prior. He didn’t quite understand the question. Off course I remember you he said. He remembered every Talmid.

You speak for me, too. This is how I felt always in his presence.
Moreover, my dear parents, zichronom livrocho, who were Holocaust survivors and then lived many decades in Toronto always spoke of the niftar with great reverence. Though he was not my rebbe, he inspired me with his friendly and warm engagements whenever we met. The “ehrlichkeit” and “emeskeit” shone through his radiance where I felt he can be considered a “yochid bdor” in his righteous way of life.
    Yehei zichro boruch! BDE.

  7. to #3. TO ADD TO YOUR OBSERVATION , HE WAS ZOCHEH TO BE IN UMAN FOR ROSH HASHANA WHEN THE COMMUNISTS
STILL RU;LED. REMEMBER HIM STATING AT THE TIME THAT THERE WERE JUST ABOUT 20 PEOPLE THERE FOR YOM TOV.(late 70s or very early 80s)

  8. Truly an Erlicher Yid
But your story is wrong both he and his wife taught at Eitz Chaim on D’Arcy street, and then at the Viewmount campus.
For a short while tried real estate then became a teacher again at Yeshiva Yesodeh Hatorah (which was only built in ’64) in the 70’s. Originally called Yeshiva Shloimei Emunah Yisroel at College and Major streets this was a Chasidishe Yiddish speaking cheder starter by Teitcher Rav zt”l, (Rav Meir Grunwald) In ’52 Yeshiva Yesodeh Hatorah didn’t exist
Rabbi Jacobovitch was most definitely a “Rebbe” to many children and an extraordinary Erlicher Yid
