It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rav Avrohom Yosef Leizerson zt”l, the longtime chairman of Chinuch Atzmai, who passed away over Shabbos at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Yerushalayim. He was 77.

Rabbi Leizerson briefly served as an MK in the 14th Knesset for Agudas Yisroel in Yahadut Hatorah and served as a deputy mayor of Yerushalayim.

Minister of Health and Torah Judaism Chairman Yaakov Litzman said remarked, “We are stunned and shocked by the passing of Rabbi Leizerson, who gave his heart and soul to the chareidi public, and was the trusted emissary of gedolei Yisroel,” including his uncle, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach.

Litzman noted the battles fought by Rav Leizerman to maintain the religious character of Yerushalayim and Israel in general, and his efforts to enhance the chinuch of the children of Israel.

Rabbi Leizerson was born in Yerushalayim on 11 Teves, 5703/1943, a son of Reb Simcha Bunim Leizerson, a young gaon who came to Eretz Yisroel from Lodz in 5697/1937 and passed away at the young age of thirty in 5706/1946.

Rabbi Leizerson’s mother was a sister of Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach.

Over the years he was involved in many public capacities, including serving on the Yerushalayim City Council, on the board and chairman of Chinuch Atzmai, as an Agudas Yisroel MK for one term, and others.

His son is Rav Simcha Bunim Leizerson, author of the Shulchan Shlomo series of seforim that are based on the rulings of Rav Shlomo Zalman.

 Yehi zichro boruch.
