rav avrohom yosef weissIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Rav Avrohom Yosef Weiss zt”l. He was 95.

Rav Weiss was a noted talmid chochom and marbitz Torah, serving as a maggid shiur at Yeshiva Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon in New York City for over six decades and serving as a bochen for the yeshiva’s semichah program. Rav Weiss also served as the rov of Kehillas Moriah on the Upper West Side. 

Rav Weiss resided on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, where he was respected for his Torah knowledge and acumen, serving as a beacon of light for the local frum community.

Rav Weiss was born in 1920 in the Hungarian town of Nanash to his parents, Reb Chaim Shia  and Mindel Weiss.

After his parents immigrated to America, Rav Weiss joined Yeshivah Torah Vodaas and then Yeshiva Rebbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon.

Even before his marriage, in 1939, Rav Weiss began delivering shiurim at Yeshiva Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon. Several years later, he married his wife, Miriam, a daughter of Dr. Refoel Moller of the Breuer’s kehillah in Washington Heights.

rav avrohom yosef weiss 1Rav Weiss is survived by his wife, Rebbetzin Miriam Weiss; his children, R’ Hershel Weiss, R’ Chaim Yeshaya Weiss, R’ Shamshon Weiss, Mrs. Rivka Taub and Mrs. Rochel Gottesman; and grandchildren following in his ways. He was predeceased by his daughter, Rebbetzin Esther Alster a”h.

The family is sitting shivah at 473 West End Avenue, between West 82nd Street and West 83rd Street, Apt 4B, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan until Friday afternoon.
