Rav Chaim Kanievsky opposes Jews living in West Bank settlements on the grounds that it is a provocation to Arabs, his grandson has said, according to a report from the Kan public broadcaster.

Yaakov (Yanki) Kanievsky, who acts as a spokesman and surrogate for his grandfather Rav Chaim Kanievsky, widely acknowledged as the preeminent gadol hador, made the revelation during private conversations in which he discussed the possibility of charedi parties joining the governing coalition. Rav Chaim is the spiritual leader of the United Torah Judaism party, which followed former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu into the opposition.

Talking with an unidentified person, he was asked if the charedim would join the coalition, a collection of left-wing, centrist, and right-wing parties, along with one Islamist faction, that ended Netanyahu’s more than 12 years in office. During that time, the charedi parties were Netanyahu’s staunch allies.

“We would need to see what the offer is, what they are prepared to do,” he said. “Let them talk about it.”

  1. Shtuyot. Don’t believe everything you read.
Rav Chaim Kanievsky shlita said that he is against “West Bank” settlements? Really now.
A large percentage of the chareidi population today lives over the Green Line (a.k.a. the West Bank) in Kiryat Sefer, Beitar and the many neighborhoods in Yerushalayim that were built after 1967, among them Ramot, Ramat Shlomo, Neve Yaakov and more.

  3. Rav Schach ZT”L said very similar things. I was told, he wasn’t happy even about Kiryat Sefer being built.

  4. ONCE AGAIN THE CENSURES AT MATZAV DECIDE WHATS TRUTH AND WHATS HARMFUL…USUALLY TRUTH IS ALWAYS HARMFUL TO THE PERFECT GERMANS WHO WANTED TO BLEND IN…..CENSURES I GAVE YOU A PERFECT ANALYSIS. EITHER OF THE 3 POSSIBLILITIES EXIST..AND YOURE AFRAID…..THEN YOURE NOT WORTH READING ANYMORE..YOU ARE NO DIFFERENT THEN THE XTIAN MISSIONARIES…

  5. Not shtuyot.

There are places that are provocations and places that are not. Arabs are not provoked by Jews living in kiryat Sefer. They don’t like them but it not a provocation

  6. Arabs certainly are provoked by Jews living in Kiryat Sefer.
I remember a few years back Bayit Cham, the big mental health organization in Israel, came to fundraise in the US for a new clinic in Kiryat Sefer because Arabs and leftists won the case against them claiming that Bayit Cham’s Kiryat Sefer clinic was located on ARAB LAND. Yes! It really happened. They were forced to relocate (within Kiryat Sefer) and in the interim there were a couple of suicides by patients who panicked that their lifeline was threatened…
True, Kiryat Sefer, Ramat Eshkol, etc., are less of a provocation than Sheik Jarrah, but cooperating with the Arabs and the Left in support of legislation that makes “over the Green Line” illegal would endanger the homes of many, many families. I cannot believe that Rav Chaim shlita would encourage being a partner in such a מהלך.
About Rav Shach ztz”l’s stance, I don’t know what he would say in today’s situation but I do know that when Kiryat Sefer was being built a bit less than 30 years ago (27-28?) and friends of mine were looking into buying there but were concerned that it over over the Green Line, Rav Shteinman ztz”l gave them the green light.

  7. If you believe that making Yehuda and Shomron judenrein will have any effect on reducing the islamonazi hatred, here’s a scientific experiment for you: put on a full chasidishe levush and wear some kind of a neturei karta slogan on yourself, so that it is clear that you are not a so called “settler”, then proceed to take an promenade through an Arab neighborhood. After all, according to you, you have nothing to fear as it’s not you being a Jew that “provokes” the islamonazis, but some “settlers”; right?!. Tell us your impressions when you come out from the hospital.

  8. There is a reason why Reb Moishe wrote very thorough teshuvos. We can’t rely on hearsay and babamaisos. The job of Am Yisroel is to fulfill Toras Hashem, and Toras Hashem only, and nothing but Toras Hashem – and Toras Hashem comes from Hashem only, and not from anyone else, no matter how great this other source may be, as you cannot compare a mere greatness to infinity. We don’t have intermediaries in Yidishkeit, and there is no official position of godol hador – there are Rabonim who transmit Messora and nothing else, and definitely not their personal opinions. If someone wants to convey his Messorah and Daas Torah, then bring all your sources and all your svoros in a comprehensive teshuva or a seifer if you wish, and make it all real and official. Something like Satmar Ruv who valiantly put his medina-hashkafa in a seifer, a daas yochid but nonetheless. Any of the contemporary hearsay stories are completely unreliable and are actually making letsonus of Yidishkeit. Stop publishing these irresponsible hearsay stories. A superficial Judaism is an oxymoron. There is only one Emes. Everything else is a sheker.
