rav-aharon-leib-shteinmanIt is known that Maran Rav Chaim Kanievsky, during his bi-annual visits to his father-in-law, Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, would recite the bracha of Shecholak meichachmaso liyerei’av.

The bracha of “Shecholak meichachmaso liyerei’av” is customarily recited upon seeing a person who has been blessed with knowledge of the entire Torah.

Two Israeli media outlets report that a rov in Bnei Brak recently asked Rav Chaim upon whom the bracha can be said nowadays. Rav Chaim ostensibly replied that the bracha could be said – with sheim umalchus – upon seeing Maran Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman.

[A talmid chochom told Matzav.com Israel that based on information he received, unlike certain reports, Rav Chaim did not say that one must say it, but rather that one may say it.]

As an aside, back in September of 2009, a yungerman visiting Rav Elyashiv asked him if one can recite the bracha of “Shecholak meichachmaso liyerei’av on his son-in-law, Rav Chaim Kanievsky.

As is well known, Rav Chaim is a virtual boki in kol haTorah kulah.

Without hesitation, the posek hador responded that there is no question that one may make the bracha on Rav Chaim.

The yungerman then asked whether the bracha should be recited b’sheim umalchus. “Does that mean one can say the name of Hashem when making the bracha?” asked the yungerman.

Rav Elyashiv replied, “When I said that you can make the bracha, I absolutely meant a regular bracha with Hashem’s name.”

  1. When Rav Shach zt’l was in his later years and no longer delivered shiurim, someone asked Rav Elyashiv zt’l if the blessing of ‘shecholak chochmaso lirayav’ could still be said on the Ponovezer Rosh Yeshiva.

Rav Elyashiv smiled and replied: “I’m not sure, but the bracha ‘shekocho ugevuraso malay olom’ can certainly be recited!”

  2. …Rav Chaim is a virtual boki in kol haTorah kulah….

    1. Virtual boki? Not a boki, only a virtual baki?
    2. How would you know? Did you test him?
    3. Rav Shteinman is well into his 90s. Until now one couldn’t make a brachah?
