rav-chaim-kanievskyYesterday, the first day of Chol Hamoed in Eretz Yisroel, Maran Rav Chaim Kanievsky paid his annual visit to his father-in-law, Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, who is at Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center in Yerushalayim.

Rav Chaim first visited Yeshiva Tiferes Yisroel in the Givat Shaul section of Yerushalayim, where he graced a yeshivas bein hazemanim run by Rav Yisroel Meir Druk.

Rav Chaim then traveled to Shaarei Tzedek, going to the eighth floor of the hospital where his father-in-law, the posek hador, has been hospitalized. Rav Chaim was accompanied by his son, Rav Yitzchok Shaul Kanievsky, his grandson, Rav Aryeh Kanievsky, and his driver, Reb Yeshaya Epstein.

Upon entering the room, Rav Chaim wished Rav Elyashiv a refuah sheleimah. He then recited the bracha of Shecholak meichachmaso liyerei’av.

The bracha of “Shecholak meichachmaso liyerei’av” is customarily recited upon seeing a person who has been blessed with knowledge of the entire Torah.

Rav Chaim then recited three kapitlach of Tehillim before departing and went to daven at the Kosel before returning to his home in Bnei Brak.

As an aside, regarding the bracha of Shecholak meichachmaso liyerei’av, it is interesting to note that back in September of 2009, Matzav.com reported that yungerman visited the posek hador, Rav Elyashiv, and asked him if one can recite the bracha of “Shecholak meichachmaso liyerei’av on his son-in-law, Rav Chaim Kanievsky.

As is well known, Rav Chaim Kanievsky is a virtual boki in kol haTorah kulah.

Those present looked at Rav Elyashiv to see what he would respond. Without hesitation, the posek hador responded that there is no question that one may make the bracha on Rav Chaim.

The yungerman then asked whether the bracha should be recited b’sheim umalchus. “Does that mean one can say the name of Hashem when making the bracha?” asked the yungerman.

Rav Elyashiv replied, “When I said that you can make the bracha, I absolutely meant a regular bracha with Hashem’s name.”

As is well known, each day, Rav Chaim Kanievsky learns Shas BavliShas YerushalamiNach, RambamShulchan AruchMishnah Berurah and more. Over the course of the year, he also completes Medrash RabbahMedrash TanchumahSifraSifri and Tosefta. He also spends time writing his chiddushim and seforim.

  1. Did I get it right?

Rav Kanievsky FINISHES shas bavli and yerushalmi, Nach (whats about Torah as in TaNaCH?), Rambam, shulchan oruch, Mishne Berurah EVERY DAY?????

  2. Yes Rav Chaim for probably over 40 years has been finishing TAnach, OBVIOUSLY Torah is included, as every jew is supposed to do “shnayim mikra”, hears laining etc. Rav chaim also does Bavli, yerushami, ALL midrishe chazal -sifra sirfei tosefta medrash rabba, the mesechtos ketanos etc etc Also 4 chelkei shulchan aruch. He LEARNS it each DAY to finish each YEAR

  3. #2,

He has a time-slot that he learns every day, and he completes it every year. He makes his Siyum on erev Pesach. (The rest of his day is spent learning certain things more in depth, receiving visitors etc. He never stops learning in-depth).

The time that he allots for this learning seder, becomes extra in a leap year that there are two Adars. He uses that time to put together a Sefer. So following every leap year, he publishes a sefer. His seforim are very well received.

  4. “As is well known, each day, Rav Chaim Kanievsky learns …….. and more. Over the course of the year, he also completes……”

The words ‘ALSO’ completes’ would indicate, to most readers, that he completes bavli etc. every day and every year ‘also completes’ medrash etc.

    Which sounded a little exaggerated
