chaim-pinchos-scheinbergRav Chaim Pinchos Scheinberg, senior rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Torah Ore in Yerushalayim and rov of Kiryat Mattersdorf, recently celebrated his 100th birthday, joining a small number of gedolei Torah across the globe who have reached that milestone. The birthday, which fell before the Yomim Tovim, was celebrated privately, with little fanfare.

Earlier this year, the posek hador, Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, marked his 100th birthday, as was widely reported here and in the general chareidi media. Rav Yitzchok Dov Koppelman, senior rosh yeshiva in Lucerne and the last remaining talmid of Rav Shimon Shkop in Grodno, is another notable centenarian gadol.

Rav Scheinberg is a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah in Eretz Yisroel. His wife, Rebbetzin Basha (Bessie) Scheinberg a”h, to whom he was married for 80 years, passed away one year ago. She was a daughter of Rav Yaakov Yosef and Rebbetzin Aidel Herman zt”l, the renowned mokirei rabonon, machnisei orech and Torah pioneers in America.

Rav Scheinberg was recently honored for his worldwide harbotzas haTorah at the annual Yeshiva Torah Ore Dinner one year ago. The yeshiva paid tribute to Rav Scheinberg’s 75 years of harbotzas haTorah and his tremendous hashpa’ah upon hundreds and hundreds of talmidim and the greater Olam HaTorah.

Rav Scheinberg was born in 1910 in Poland. He moved to the United States at the age of nine and attended public school. It was actually his father-in-law, Rav Herman, who got the young Chaim Pinchos Scheinberg out of public school and into a yeshiva. That relationship came full circle when Rav Scheinberg married his rebbetzin.

Rav Scheinberg attended Yeshiva Rabbi Jacob Joseph (RJJ) at the age of 14. He then learned at Rav Yehuda Levenberg’s Yeshiva Bais Medrash LeRabbonim in New Haven, Connecticut. At age seventeen, Rav Scheinberg learned at Yeshiva Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon where he studied under the Meisitcher Illui, Rav Shlomo Polachek, as well as Rav Moshe Soloveitchik, and Rav Shimon Shkop (who lived in New York for a short period).

After marrying his rebbetzin at the age of 19, Rav Scheinberg and his wife moved to Mir, Poland, where Rav Scheinberg learned in the Mir Yeshiva for five years. The Rov and Rebbetzin were from a handful of Americans in Mir at that time.

Rav and Rebbetzin Scheinberg returned to the US and Rav Scheinberg became a maggid shiur at the New Haven Yeshiva, which ultimately closed in 1938. He then became the mashgiach at the Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim in Queens.

In the 1960s, Rav and Rebbetzin Scheinberg relocated from the United States to Israel, where Rav Scheinberg founded Yeshiva Torah Ore.

Rav Scheinberg’s genius in Torah was recognized at a relatively young age, when he authored the monumental seforim Tabaas Hachoshen. For many decades, Rav Scheinberg has led Torah Ore with selfless devotion to every talmid. Thousands of its alumni have gone on to become roshei yeshiva, rabbonim, rabbeim, and professional lay leaders of Jewish communities throughout the world.  The rosh yeshiva‘s teachings and seforim are disseminated by his talmidim across the globe.

The yeshiva has grown over the years, with a current enrollment of over 700 talmidim, including one of the largest kollelim in Yerushalayim.

Klal Yisroel is fortunate to have such a gadol in Torah and middos in our midst, a living link to the world of Torah of the early part of the last century, and a living example of what an American-raised boy can achieve, reaching phenomenal heights in Torah, ultimately becoming one of the gedolei Torah of Klal Yisroel.

May Hakadosh Boruch Hu give the rosh yeshiva koach and gezunt to continue teaching, guiding and inspiring Klal Yisroel for many more years.

  1. Correction, Yeshivas Torah Ore was originally founded in Bensonhurst Brooklyn and then relocated together with the Rosh Hayehiva to Eretz Yisroel.

  2. I have tremendous hakaras hatov to the Rav. When I was learning in Yeshiva in Yerushalayim IHK twenty years ago, my Father had a heart attack. My friend suggested we immediately go to Rav Scheinberg for a teffilah and brucha for rafuah. My Father passed away two years ago and I immediately thought that the zechus of Rav Scheinberg’s brucha gave my Father 18 Chai years of life. Thank you Rav and thank you HKBH for listening to the Rav. May HKBH bless the Rav with many more years of health to learn and teach Torah to Klal Yisrael. Amen.

  3. HKB”H should give the R”Y Shlit”a arichas yomim with good health to continue to lead K’lal Yisrel!!

Just a quick question – was the R”Y the mashgiach at the Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim in Queens or when it was located in Brooklyn?

  4. Amein

7, today that would suggest a lack of concern over proper enviroment and Jewish education (though it isn’t always so) then it was normal

  5. 1- I think Torah Ohr was started in Brooklyn.
2- he is not the Rav [nor ever was] of matersdorf. The rav is R’ Akiva Ehernfeld, who bacame Rav after his grandfather passed away. R’ Scheinberg, may he live beyond 120, is officially the moreh tzedek of the neighborhood.

  6. to matzav:
number ten wrote that he thinks that the article should include bli ayin hara. once this article is written i couldn’t agree more.BUT WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE WRITTEN IN THE FIRST PLACE? can’t you leave the ages of gedolim (and all older people) ALONE? every article that talks about rav scheinberg, rav elyashiv, rav koppelman,….the list goes on and on. …on the weakening body of the 100(plus) year old gadol. maybe thats what put the ayin hara on them and so many of them were niftar Please stop writing their age. no one has to know

    thank you
