[Audio below.] It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rav Chaim Shlomo Sabiner z”l. He was 89.

He was born in Yerushalayim on the 12th of Adar in 1933. His father, Rabbi Yaakov Meir Sabiner, was a son of the noted baal menagein and composer Rabbi Yisrael Sabiner of Lodz, Poland.

He came from a Gerer family of baalei menagnim. As a boy, he was a member of the Gerer choir in Yerushalayim during the early years of the leadership of the Bais Yisroel.

Reb Chaim Shlomo is remembered for composing a famous Shoshanas Yaakov tune. The song was composed about 75 years ago when he was a bochur, a talmid at Yeshiva Sefas Emes in Yerushalayim.

“All in all, I was not a composer, nor did I try to compose too much afterwards,” he told a friend. “I just left the house in the direction of Yeshivas Sefas Emes and began singing this song. I sang it to friends and suddenly it became a hit. I did not imagine that it would catch on like that.”

He is survived by his sons, Reb Avraham Mordechai, Reb Gedaliah and Reb Yisrael Henach, his son-in-law Reb Avraham Mordechai Erlich, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The levayah was held last night at the Shamgar Funeral Home in Jerusalem en route to Har Hamenuchos for kevurahthere.

Yehi zichro boruch.
