It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rav Chanina Herzberg zt”l, who served as the menahel of Yeshiva Toras Chaim of South Shore for nearly 40 years.

Rav Hertzberg grew up in the East New York section of Brooklyn, attending Yeshiva Toras Chaim under Rav Isaac Schmidman. He then attended Mesivta Yeshiva Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin, where he became a talmid of Rav Yitzchok Hutner zt”l.

When Rav Shlomo Freifeld zt”l founded Yeshivas Sh’or Yoshuv in Far Rockaway, Rav Herzberg was among the early talmidim, drawing close to Rav Shlomo.

Rav Herzberg subsequently became a rebbi and a s’gan menahel at Yeshiva Tiferes Moshe. Rav Binyomin Kamenetzky zt”l then invited him to assume the role of menahel of Yeshiva of South Shore, which had merged with Rav Herzberg’s alma mater, Rabbi Schmidman’s Yeshiva Toras Chaim.

Rav Herzberg also served as the rov of Bais Medrash Ohr Shlomo, located on Cornaga Avenue and named in memory of his rebbi, Rav Shlomo.

Rav Herzberg is survived by his dedicated wife, Mrs. Naomi Herberg, a daughter of Rav Moshe Spiegel zt”l and a granddaughter of Rav Elchonon Yochonon Spiegel, the Ostrove-Kalushiner Rebbe; and their children, Reb Moshe Herzberg, Reb Mendy Herzberg, Rabbi Eli Herzberg, Rabbi Yitzchok Herzberg, Reb Yudy Herzberg, Mrs. Rivky Nachman, and Mrs Brocha Kaplan.

The levayah will be held this morning, at 10:30, at Yeshiva Toras Chaim Bais Binyamin, located at 1170 William Street in Hewlett, NY. Kevurah will follow at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, New Jersey. Shivah will take place at 1208 Cornaga Avenue in Far Rockaway.

Yehi zichro boruch.

  1. For years I davened with him Yomim Noraim at Shor Yoshuv. An eidel man, a master mechanech. BDE. May he be a melitz yosher to his family and Klal Yisroel.

  2. R’ Hertzberg was my Rebbie in 1972 in Yeshiva Tiferes Moshe. I imagine it was his first teaching position. I can still remember his warmth and caring. He would always start the day with a milsa bdechusa as he put it, a story or just shmooze to warm us up before starting the shiur. He understood kids, was a good listener and a master mechanech. Yehi zichro baruch.
