It was recently revealed that years ago, speaking at an educational conference, the mashgiach Rav Dov Yaffe said that yeshivos must be careful not to “clip the wings” of bochurim who have an original approach to learning.
As an example, he pointed to two gedolei hador who may have been lost were they not allowed to follow their own paths.
One was Rav Nissim Karelitz, whom the Ponevezher Rov left to his own devices as he methodically went through Shas along with the Rosh, Nimukei Yosef, Tur, Beis Yosef and the Shulchan Aruch and its commentaries, together with the Chazon Ish.
The second was Rav Chaim Kanievsky, Rav Yaffe said, who already began his taxing schedule of going through massive quantities of material while still a bochur in Petach Tikvah’s Lomza Yeshiva.
