It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rav Dovid Shraga Hakohein Katz zt”l, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Mishkan Yaakov in Haifa and rov of the Carmel neighborhood in the city. He was 89.

Rav Katz was born in Hungary, a son of the late Rav Shmaya Katz, and at the age of 5 he immigrated to the Holy Land with his father, who was one of the builders of Yiddishkeit in Haifa.

In Haifa, he first learned at Yeshiva Tiferes Yisroel and then Yeshiva L’tzeirim in Kfar Saba under Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman. For Yeshiva Gedolah, he joined the Ponovezh Yeshiva, where he was a talmid muvhak of the Ponovezher Rov. As a 28-year-old bochur, he was appointed as rov in Haifa.

He married his wife, Rebbetzin Chana Katz, daughter of former MK R’ Yankel Katz, who was the director of Bais Yaakov in Haifa for many years.

He founded Yeshiva Mishkan Yaakov in Haifa a decade ago, and also served as the rov of the Carmel neighborhood for thirty years.

Throughout his life, he was immersed in Torah and beign marbitz Torah to thousands.

He leaves behind an outstanding family, including his son, Rav Chaim Katz, who will now serve as rosh yeshiva; Rav Avrohom Yaakov Katz, rov of the Ohel Eitan shul in Neve Yaakov, Yerushalayim; and his daughters, married to Rav Shaul Cohen, Rosh Kollel Nachlas Haleviim, and Rav Avrohom Ben Shalom.
